Mine craft servers

Apologies If this has been covered before in the, lengthy, Minecraft thread.
My lad wants to set up a server on our Mac so his friends can visit his worlds,
I've looked at the tutorials and "how to..." pages on the Minecraft web site and it seems fairly straight forward.
However there's quite a few warnings about security and crashes.
Does anyone have any tips or experience on doing this?

It may be worth looking into the new 'Minecraft Realms' they've started up here in the UK, which are rental servers hosted by Mojang themselves.
