Considering the above to replace my 600D. Leaning towards the 70D as newer than the 7D. Anything I would miss on the 7D. Not sure I want to wait until 7D ii as there is no release date yet.

Other option is 6, however looking at c£300 more and I can't use my 15-85mm as going to full frame.

I should add the camera will mostly be used for Motorsport photography and I will be soon buying a sigma 50-500 or 100-400L to go with it.

Also, where to buy from? Digital rev or panamoz. Anyone ever chosen the bacs option on panamoz to make it even cheaper? Just seems less secure.

70D user here, no reason to buy a 7D unless you need the proper weather sealing. I use my 70D for motorsport and the AF system copes well.

I had the Sigma 50-500 on my 60D.

On my copy at least, above 350-400mm was pretty soft, even more so wide open, F6.3 at those lengths, I had to stop down quite a bit more to get something decent.

In hindsight, as above 400mm was not that sharp anyway on the Sigma, and for 'keeper' shots unusable, I think I would have got far superior results with the Canon 300mm f4L IS prime for similar money, and if necessary cropping the shot. I think there's a Canon 400mm prime for about the same money but with no IS and f5.6.

Probably be better off with a new 70D. I wanted to update from my very good 40D (which I still havesmile), but couldn't justify the expense of a new camera so bought a used 7D. With so many menu options it's got my brain working again!

Rain isn't a problem either (last week at Gurston Down):

Thanks all so far.

So what does the 7D have over the 70D?

I thought the 70D did have weatherproofing?!

7d has better ergonomics, viewfinder, more focus point options, cf card, bigger buffer, better construction.

6d is not a motorsport camera unless you have long glass and it's very dark then it will out perform the crops

So it's between 70D & 7D really?!

I thought they both had 19 point focus options? And the 70D has the new dual pixel thingy.

Anyone know if 70D is weatherproof? I've read somewhere it is and others don't say.

Dual pixel thing us video and live view, not going to work for motor sports.

They have the same af chip but 7d has more modes. Spot and cluster etc.

Weather sealing, neither is stated but 7d has sealing up to 1dn level, it's not perfect by any means much better off putting trust in rain sleve.

I'd recommend you handle both, I found the 7D preferable to the 70D when compared to my 40D, but you may like the flip screen on the 70D. The extra focusing options on the 7D, already mentioned, seemed worth having to me - and I've used themsmile.

70d no question.

7d is old , like many I kept my 40d for years as nothing worth buying, he 70d is well worth buying, got mine from hdew.
Use it for Motorsport with the canon 300mm f4 and the 70-200 f4 is

Great combo for the prosumer.

Shots clean up very well on high ISO also in RAW.

Don't see any reason to buy a 7d. I put money on the mk2 this year as well.

7d may be old but that makes little difference. 7dmk2 will be a lot more money.

7d mk2 coming out will seriously depress 7d prices.

Unless the 7d MKii is not *that much* better, or, much more expensive than the 7D.

Funnily enough, that scenario may actually mean a slight appreciation in 2nd hand values.

I think this will be the case. Currently, a new 7D can be bought (with cashback)for £829, maybe less if the retailer is keen to deal. I think Canon will pitch the replacement somewhere between the 6D (£1300) and the 5D3 (£2000 with the current cashback offer) and if that is right, once new supplies of the current 7D are exhausted, 2nd hand prices might pick up a bit. A bit like new car offers, once the current model starts getting offered with increasingly attractive deals, a replacement is usually imminent.

The 6D has an RRP of £1,799.99 (if a quick Google hasn't failed me) so I'd expect the 7D2 to sneak in under that, possibly about £1600 to begin with.

I still think we'll see a flood of second-hand 7Ds on to the market though. At the moment if you are an APS-C shooter (i.e. sports or wildlife) there is no real upgrade if you already have a 7D but the mark 2 will change that.

There is, but like most things, they come at a price.

If everything you are going to be shooting is going to be 300mm and up, I'd actually go for the 300mm prime. It's faster and the IQ and sharpness will be better.

Other option at the same price is the 70-200 f2.8 and an extender.

No they definitely won't, WRC and oulton park will mean a lot is below and thats why I considered a 70-200mm originally. Maybe I should buy that and then an extender or a 300mm or 400mm prime later this year for Silverstone and other places where I need the extra reach?

Lots of questions, these aren't necessarily directed at you, would love some answers off anyone who can advise.

I'd want IS so of the four 70-200mm models 2 are out of the equation, there is also a Sigma available at this length. Which is recommended? I've heard the f2.8 IS is an amazing lens, but obviously it carries a premium of around £500 over the f4 is and the sigma.

Am I right to dismiss the 100-400L as not a great lens?

I know the benefits of prime lenses, 500mm is out of my price range, so 300mm and 400mm are similar prices, is one obviously better than the other?

Extenders. I understand they increase the reach, and reduce the max aperture by 1 or 2 stops, but I don't understand the losing AF if above a certain Aperture?! Can someone explain in layman terms how that works?

And finally, is the sigma 50-500mm a good lens, as it would cover all options, or should it be dismissed?

Thanks in advance

AF systems need a certain amount of light to 'get a grip'; that is usually about f8 IIRC.
