Extract from Newsletter #6 2004 by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (CCCUK is a member)...

"Daytime Running Lights:
...The EC is expected to draft a proposal requiring all new cars to use DRL's and... they are probably going to draft a proposal requiring them to be used by all existing vehicles."

I thought those of you who have disabled yours would enjoy putting those long-lost relays back in!!!!!

Happy days. Buy shares in Lucas, and remember who told you...! We can all look like wit Volvos now.

Well they've done it to motorcycles already... Anyone else remember the camoflage research done by the MoD on Salisbury plain that found if you added small lights around the edge of your battle tank it actually made it less rather than more visible ?

Being seen is all about creating a contrast between you and your surrounding environment not simply just putting some lights on and leaving 'em on.

...and of course they'll have to be white so you'll still have to disable the US DRL and replace it with a white DRL....doh!

My UK C5 does not have DRLs. Never could see the point and in the end it must add to pollution so why on earth...

I re-enabled my disconnected [amber] running lights, never caused me any problems (apart from disapproval but "it'll be alright" at MOT time!)...

And why did I reconnect them? 'Cause I like the piccies of the C4s in the brochures with the amber DRLs on

I agree - C5s in the states with their DRLs on look stunning.

I used to run them on my C4 but beware - because they are orange they can be mistaken for indicators. Yes I know they don't flash, but that doesn't stop drongos and old people pulling out in front of you thinking you are turning left. It got too risky so I disconnected them. No doubt any insurance company would wriggle out of a claim if DRLs came to light (excuse the pun).

They'll probably have to be white anyway! More failed MOTs...

As long as there are white sidelights, orange lamps on the front are OK. The new Discovery uses them.

They won't be able to pass a law on retrospective changes. Otherwise they would do the same with airbags, seat belts etc.

I've got UK (well, headlamps that dip left) lenses in my headlights, which are also not of the sealed beam variety. The benefit of these is they have the sidelight bulbs fitted in them. So for legality, I use these, but have the option of reconnecting the amber side lights just by changing a couple of bullet connectors.

My mum used to have an 86 Camaro - we replaced the headlamps on that too with UK spec ones, same thing, had the sidelight bulbs in them if you wanted to use them. WHat I'm getting to is you may be able to get them for C5 lights (since they're a different size to the C$ ones...). Only trouble is of course you have to have the headlights up to use them - but it doesn't cause any debate at MOT time...

As my car was originally a German import, it's headlamps still are "that way inclined"... An easy, MOT-passing (and very cheap ) fix is to put some of those headlamp deflector thingies you get for driving on the continent (only put them on the other way round, obviously!)...

Since thankfully the headlights are usually hidden, this ain't too much an issue...

It's that bloody fog light though that annoys me!!!! Aaarrghh!!

Do not know if it is true, but I was told those stick on's are not ok for the MOT, but alot of tester and I have had quite a few try to be helpful. I have a 2004 so not yet needed a MOT, but 15 years with an 1980 with US spec lights not always a problem.

Thank goodness I used the A2 circuit breaker to disable mine!

Hopefully they'll make their minds up before I import the Vette!

MOT testers aren't supposed to pass headlamps with any form of deflector on it. Mine does, on the Camaro, using electrical tape (LOL) but since the Camaro's amazing German headlamps are so damn feeble, I can honestly say nobody has ever flashed me in 3 years. Sometimes, when the salt is spraying, I wonder if they're still on.
