When accelerating (most noticible in 3rd) a light plastic sounding type of whirring (round and round) squeak can be heard. It sounds like its coming from the centre of the dashboard. The squeak is not high pitched as in shrill, but high enough to be a "squeak"

Any ideas what it might be?

I'll set a cheese trap and let you know if I catch anything Could anything else make a whirring sound in the dash/bonnet of a V8S which is most apparent under acceleration in 3rd?

I had a similar problem but found it was the inlaid piece of plastic on the top of the gearnob, more of a buzz than a sqeeke, but sounded like it was in the dash. although a mouse is possible, try giving it some cheese!

I would guess there is something behind the dashboard which is moving slightly under vibration, rather than things actually rotating.

I wondered hard about this, but it does sound like a rotationally generated noise. Its not a squeak, its more of a squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeererrrerrrrrrrrrrr kinda sound

Hard to explain. Another deep groaning board creeking sound also started recently

Hey, all this talk of mice, don't knock it - about 4 years ago I had a very nice 1979 3000S and I kept it all one winter in a heated garage at a friend's house - you guessed it, mice got in and chewed the loom where it passes through the transmission tunnel. Took out handfulls of nesting material and peanuts when I finally got to it, had to use poison to get rid of the little boogers luckily none of the wires shorted but you have been warned !

update: I started my car 3 times today, and each time I started her up, there was a new noise which sounded like a cat which had caught the mouse. Not really, I jest... but there was a strange new sound.

It sounded like a deep groaning/straining noise. Might this be the starter motor? It seemed to sound on top of (or in addition to) the starter motor sound when I turned the ignition, anyone have any ideas what item in the car might make groaning type noises upon startup, and could be heard faintly/occasionally under acceleration in third?

I hope its not expensive, whatever it is it sounds like it needs a trip to the vet.

Are you sure it's in the dash and not a result of gearbox / clutch (under the dash). Do you have a piece of plastic wrapped around the prop etc. Does it occur in gear/ out of gear, clutch in / out.

My clutch release bearing made a noise like a hamster in a wheel just before it went. I am not saying it is this, but are you sure where it is coming from.

Obviously vibration is the most likely, does it only occur at certain revs.

Cheers mate, I really am not sure, will have to pay more attention. The problems are intermittant, though. The car is back for another RR sesh next week, Austec will have to look into it I guess.

There are three sounds... unhealthy sound on startup, strange occasional high pitched hampster-in-wheel sound, and even more unhealthy (again occasional) deep groaning creeking type sound. Plus the weird sound on startup.

Possible wildlife infestation problem by the sound of it...

You sure it's not the heater fan - mine makes a variety of interesting noises some of which you have described - I spray with wd40 OK for about 3 days then noises crank up again!!

The high pitched sound, im not sure. Could be. Im sure it sounds like its part of a rotating somethingorother. However, it becomes more pronounced (its faint as it is) under gentle acceleration in 3rd. Im not sure, with luck Austec might find it tomorrow. So long as its not "bad news" then I can live with a squeak or two. Cheers for the suggestion.
