Hi folks. My oil check is flashing at the bottom so it needs a top up but I can't remember the full procedure....

1) get to temperature
2) stop car somewhere flat
3) check oil (takes about 10 mins I think to measure when warm).
4) top up. Run oil check again and repeat check.

Is that right? And how much does it normally take from top to bottom please? Conscious not to overfill!

Cheers!

Depends upon the model and model year.

If the add or low oil warning is flashing that's a good sign the level is really low, so I'd dump in at least a half a quart and it could require a full quart to bring the level up the max. line.

If there is a check oil level warning that could be triggered by nothing more than you have not checked the level in some time.

The proper procedure for checking the oil level should be in the owner manual.

I know of only two ways. The first is for my Boxster. I check this with the engine off, it can be hot or cold, and it must have been off long enough for the oil to have drained back into the sump. If when I turn on the key the count down timer is anything more than 5 seconds I do not bother to wait as I know the reading may not be as close to right as if I waited longer. The car should be level but there is nothing I know of that warns me if the car is not level enough.

The second way is with my Turbo. In this case the engine has to be idling, but up to temperature, and the car must be reasonably level and stationary. When I go to check the oil level if the engine is too cold, if the car is not level, or the car is moving I get a warning and I can not check the oil level.

I know from a data logger in the car the techs let the engine idle 10 or more minutes at oil change time to get the oil hot enough to drain properly, then let the engine idle again after the fresh oil has been added to get the oil hot enough to do a level check to confirm the oil level hardware/system is working properly.
