Damper bent like a banana. There was a loud bang when I left the town - thought it was a pothole.

Any one else had anything like this before?

Overwhelmed by your responses. This is the best forum ever.

I willl take the Evoque tomorrow and strip the suspension out next week to make sure that there is not another problem and the damper is an effect rather than a cause. Better safe than sorry..

I had that happen on mine but it wasn't a bent rod, the top eyelet unit had unscrewed from the rod.

Thanks Mike. I stripped out the unit tonight and the rod has sheared just at the root of the thread where it enters the eyelet. I cannot see any other problems with the suspension so I am assuming that the damper was not a secondary failure. The spring and seat are untouched.

I have emailed the manufacturer and will await their response.

I had a problem some years ago with a set of AVO's for a Reliant Scimitar GTC. I compressed the springs and when I unloaded the spring compressors the top mount fractured under pressure and gave me the fright of my life
AVO replaced them straight away and said they were a bad batch, heaven knows what would have happened if they had let go when on the car

Tony, an idea springs to mind... Once you are back on the road we should do a rerun of the Test Hills Run with the S's . It was more suited to the TVR than the Blossom Trail , and combine it with a coffee break at the Broadway Tower. Gotta test it out before you travel abroad. Eh?

Too true! I will take the unit to Northampton tomorrow to see what can be done, but I must admit I am worried about the others now and wondering whether I take a deep breath and go for a set of Gaz shocks.

I really wanted to take the S to work yesterday and today, but had to be the diesel hack.
How does Saturday 24th May sound chaps, for the rerun, we could do the whole run, miss bits out or add bits in, with the possibility of a break at Broadway Tower, where a Cream Tea with a view of 5 counties and several S's would be nice, or is there time to arrange something earlier?
Depends on Tony getting roadworthy again, and other plans, gardening, shopping etc.

I have taken the full set to be inspected and strengthened so should have them back soon. Haven't checked the social diary but 24th is a possibility.

When I bought my Chimaera it had recently been fitted with AVO Dampers, 900 miles after being fitted the o/s front one snapped - sheared whatever at about 5 miles per hour.
I have been told by Qualified Engineers and Designers that if this had happened at speed I would have been dead and one of them said it would have been Murder or Manslaughter at least.
I did pass this on to VOSA and was assured that AVO were going to alter the way they were manufactured but as VOSA do not seem to have a backbone I do not know if anything has changed.
