Guys, help! Taxing / insuring a car on holiday weekend?

Right, weird situation I find myself in - currently 275 miles from home chauffeuring a mate who was meant to buy a car today. Long story short, it didn't happen but we're viewing another in the morning.

Now said car is untaxed and the current owner hasn't got it insured so that creates an issue - my mates can insure it for a day via the RAC or similar and had hoped the current owner would tax it online if the sale is agreed, but as said owner doesn't have a policy, that plans scuppered.

So, if he (the mates / potential buyer) insures it for 24hrs if / when he buys it, can he then tax it on line and whilst he won't have a tax disc, he'll have proof he has taxed it and thus drive it home then get the seller to forward the new tax disc when it arrives?

Obvious answer is to come back but we can't for about 10 days and it's a 600 mile round trip again. So, any suggestions as to how to legally get this thing home?

Or, anybody know if Flux are open on tomorrow.

I think I'd ask the insurer how quickly it appears on the mid database on a bank holiday :-(

Has the car been SORN?
If I remember rightly, you're not supposed to drive a car that's been SORN until the disc is physically in your possession. Although I suspect it would rake a rather grumpy policeman to do you for failing to display if stopped...

Won't be on the insurance database for up to a week, that is the database the online tax site searches.
No, Flux are not open today.

Post Office on Tuesday am is your only chance of getting taxed.

Only the requirement to present an insurance certificate was dropped, because it can now be checked on the MID, you still need to have insurance in place.

Legally you need to have insurance, it isn't checked when you apply for a tax disc though, only MOT.

No it's not, you can tax online with no insurance. Obviously the disc will go to the previous keeper.

There is no motor insurance database check, when taxing online or at a post office anymore.

Insure it, tax it online with V5, drive away.

You do not have to wait til the physical disk is in your posetion.

The disk will be posted to the seller/current person onV5 though, if you trust them, get them to forward it on.

I cannot wait til October, when tax disks are getting scrapped, and it all goes online.
