Over the next couple of days we will be releasing a new navigation header for PistonHeads. The objective is to help support both the navigation of the website and to help you discover more of the amazing amount of content on the website.

As always we appreciate your feedback, either via the survey link or here. We've fully tested and made modifications, internally and externally via the hundred plus members in the PH Board.

If the new header is not to your liking. Not a problem, we have added a link enabling you to revert to the old header.

Let us know what you think.

Applies to all skins, desktop and mobile?

It won't be available (yet) on phones. Desktop and tablet only.

It won't show on the forum so nothing will be dependent on skins.

Don't think I've had a new header yet, but I have this week (on my ipad mini) gained adverts that run around all four sides of the page, thereby shrinking the content onto an even smaller area.

Those will be going away for tablet devices.

Also, we do appreciate keeping this thread on topic for the new header. In fact, I'm going to close it until it's actually released.

Not exactly a radical rethink is it? Sorry to be negative, but I generally really enjoy PH, but it is getting blown into the weeds by its competition. It looks very messy, and utterly dated. Lots of white blank spaces, a slight change to the typeface (except for the classified box which remains in the old TF and therefore jars), and a big blank strip of tarmac that eventually filled in with an unrelated advert about hire cars in Germany. Perhaps this is still very much a work in progress, but even Alfa don't release half baked products anymore.

Constructive points. Increase the preview images, in size and quality. Unify the typefaces and use something modern and bold. Go look at Speedhunters (no I am not a "moar lows bra" kinda guy) and Petrolicious for some clues about striking page design. Or employ a designer perhaps.

It's ok, but the whole homepage needs redesigning, and the news articles, and the blog, and frankly all of it! Agree with the above that there needs to be an injection of modernity.

I like it, good job. Simpler and more modern without being over designed.

You should add a direct link to the 1-5 barge thread in the menu dropdown though smile

That's coming as well. This is just step 1.

I despise rollovers (is that the correct term for menus that pop out once the mouse is over it?)

It looks like a giant springboard for advertising (50% of my page is adverts!)

The rest of the front page looks incongruous as a result.

What happened to "Speed Matters" ?

Not a fan.

C+ must try harder.

In IE8 (work are very tight finanically and security) the header presents as a vertical strip of 4pt font about an inch & 1/2 wide on the LHS of the page.

Is it redesign for the sake of redesign or is it

I must be honest, I don't really look at the homepage. Use the forums and classifieds, however I did by chance use another computer today and liked it...other than the big black strip of advertising (what a waste!).

I then went back to my computer and had a look at the PH homepage and found this:

What a load of space wasted...

You can go back to the old one by clicking "find out about our new header" at the top of the page.

I've tried that and it hasn't worked for me.

In terms of feedback, I like the cleaner look, but don't like the advertising splitting the menus and content below.

I'm an accountant not a designer, but would it look a little smarter if the width restriction on the content was also applied to that black line (if you choose to keep it)?

Out of interest, how much do you earn per impression on those adverts and do you earn more if you have 3 on one page at the same time that originate from the same campaign?

It's important to remember this isn't a homepage refresh, it's a header change. We will be looking into updating the homepage soon, though, so expect less wasted space when that happens.

One step at a time. smile

Can you stop wasting your time designing dated banners and fix the issues with the site that are hindering it?
