Hi All, any help much appreciated please...

I have an issue in that I just bought a used Audi TT RS from an approved Audi Dealer. I was told by the sales person that the car has 3 previous owners, first was Audi and then two private. They didn't have the V5 at the time of sale as it was having the PP changed and the previous owner had PX'd at a landrover dealer. I took delivery of the car two weeks late due to the V5 being held up and nearly cancelled as I had a trip planned with the car and Audi couldn't deliver - however after a bit of haggling and an extra years warranty and some paint protection I took the car.

Today the V5 arrived and it states 4 previous owners. I am livid as the resale value of this car is paramount to the purchase. I have requested that Audi refund and take the car back as it is within 30 days and 1000 miles as per their sales agreement. Waiting to hear on this tomorrow. My question please is does a car registered by audi at a dealership as a demo show as a registered keeper on the V5? As far as I can tell the first private owner took possession of the car woth approx 2500miles on it (this TT RS is a 2009 plate and must have been one of the first).

I have checked the web for my consumer rights and it states that if the item was not described correctly (4 previous owners rather than 3) that I should be able to get my money back...

Any budding lawyers out there who can help?!

Thanks in advance.

Yes it does, the first registered keeper, if a dealer demo, will be the dealership themselves.

Seriously? Give over, how on gods earth will it effect resale! Life is too short.

Thank you for that info - still leaves me very annoyed but at least that part of their sale was correct in that the first owner is Audi themselves. Still very annoyed!

FWIW I think there's effectively bugger all difference between having a car with 4 or 5 keepers.

Demo plus three private isn't going to value the car any differently to three private. If (and only if) it does it will be minimal, really minimal....a few quid to someone who worries about that sort of thing when buying privately.

Spec, condition, history, mileage will matter. Just enjoy the car.

Audi UK or an Audi dealership?

If it was Audi UK then it could have been a Press Demonstrator.

A difference of 1 owner will not be of sufficient gravity to be deemed a fundamental term of the contract i.e. it will not allow the return of the car.

It may affect the price, but not hugely.

At best you should look to get free servicing for 3 years or something else from the dealer.... I'd ask them what they will do to make it up to you and see what they say. Then haggle from there.

The documentation I have doesn't show if it was Audi UK or a dealership.

Buyers remorse ? Wife tell you off?

Certainly not the affected resale value that's making you want to reject this (there will be no difference)

I reckon this warrants a "free service" or something of that ilk rather than a refund.

No not at all - it's a good piece of kit. I think my annoyance is the fact that I was sold a car with 3 previous owners and when the V5 turns up it has 4 - simple.

How would you like that to be resolved? What hardship is the number on the registration document actually causing you?

How can you justify rejecting the car?

Probably likely to be marginal as you say, but part of me thinks when the OP comes to sell in a couple of years, 3 private owners looks a lot better than 4. My logic on a performance car normally goes 1st: buys new/ex demo as they are prepared to fork out but get bored quickly 2nd: wants to buy new but can't justify it picks up nearly new, similar mentality as the first buyer, sell on reasonably quickly. 3rd: real petrol head looking for a performance car at a much better price. This is obviously a load of utter crap, but part of me fails to see where the 4th private owner fits in, 4 owners on a 2009 car would send alarm bells ringing for me.

Anyway (in complete contradiction to the paragraph above) if you want to get rid of it on this basis, my gut feeling is you simply that you heart isn't in the purchase of this car, especially as it is likely to be minimal difference on resale.

In fairness to him, he has been given the wrong information. He was told 3 owners when it's actually 4.

Regardless of justification, IINM, Audi have a cooling off period or similar where you can just hand the car back if you're not satisfied.

However, it would seem an odd thing to do if the car is otherwise fine. 4 owners instead of 3 is a little like 55k miles instead of 50k miles. A little irritating perhaps, but not the end of the world.

If you like the car and it's what you want, negotiate a way of keeping it rather than cutting your nose off out of principle.

I've seen this many times in the past and wouldn't say it's intentionally dishonest in most cases.

I would guess the for sale advert was written using the V5 prior to the dealer sending off to the DVLA so the car was traded with 3 previous owners.

Personally I don't think the value will be greatly effected unless you looking to move it on quickly.

Gary did you miss the bit where he is "Livid" ?

rofl

If OP is genuinely livid about 4 owners not 3 it is truly hilarious.
Get a grip man.
