The Group A rules used for the WRC at the time meant that if you wanted a feature on your competition car, the homologation specials that you produced had to have that feature too. In this case, Ford wanted to run water injection as a method of cooling the charge and effectively increasing the octane rating of the fuel, allowing them to run more boost. The road cars didn't have the system plumbed in and working, but the water bags and lines had to be there.

How much are other 80s/90s homologation cars going for like the M3/Integrale etc?

I thought 50k and more was commonplace

It's on the PH classifieds at present along with a £55k Integrale and quite a few others at mid £40ks.

People will ask whatever they think they can get.

I've given up being surprised what some people will pay for old fast Fords, but no doubt at some point someone with a RS branded bomber jacket will indeed say - nope, I won't buy a similar vintage Ferrari 355 that I could actually drive, no I'll buy an Escort that will be lose £25k if I dare drive it for a year.

Love these cars. Always been on the to-do list and have watched them rise steadily and are now almost too hard to justify. £50k is insane money.

I can't see how these prices are sustainable though. Once the generation of us who grew up adoring these cars has gone beyond caring about buying one, who is going to want them at those sort of prices?

If you drive it, you loose all the money. If you keep it as a museum piece, you might as well buy a crap one and respray it. No one would know the difference as it would never move.

Still... A Euro Million win and it'd be mine tomorrow!

Even with 8k on the clock and the concourse victories, to me it's worth a max of 35k.

Having owned one I can say they are great cars although mine was 400 hp but they have a crap gearbox prone to rust and it's still a mk5 escort
