With my car sitting at idle, there is a whine coming from the gearbox, if I put my foot on the clutch the whine goes. When I drive, I think there is a rattle coming from the gearbox.

Someone on another forum has suggested the release bearing is the culprit, this sounds plausible but my thinking was this noise is the gearbox itself as when i've had release bearings go before they are usually noisy with my foot on the clutch and this is the other way around.

I've recently had the gearbox off it (I was pretty sure it wasn't noisy before but I hadn't really driven the car so it could have been), the release bearing while it wasn't new wasn't all that bad either (i'd have replaced it otherwise).

I was going to replace the box but now i'm not so sure. Just looking for some input.

If you are sitting still in neutral with foot not on the clutch and the gearbox is noisy, then chances are the problem is the gearbox.

When you put your foot in the clutch, drive will be disconnected to the box and almost all of it's internal parts will stop turning. Hence the noise stops.
If you put it in gear at this point, absolutely everything will stop turning for sure.

If light pressure on the clutch pedal stops the noise, it may be the release bearing. But sounds like the box.

That was my logic also.
