.....that modern cars don't make, I genuinely can't think of the last time I heard a screeching fan belt or more likely alternator belt.

Modern cars don't do this kind if stuff, do they?

Any others?

If often here it in the winter, it's like the mating call for older cars.

Because the don't (generally) use V belts these days.

In answer to the second part. Tappet noise.

Yep - my neighbours van at 6am every weekend when he's going fishing.
