Hey Newbie here looking for advice.. Just in the process of finishing a Cobra 427 with a 520BHP chevy 383 with TWMs (British HPs
) and looking for a new project/ stable mate for the cob.. I saw the ultima GTR at Stoneliegh and fell in love with the looks and engineering.. I am looking for something to compliment the cob which is very much a high day holiday car with a very authentic look (read 60s) and want something to use on non cobra days or days I'm in the mood for something else, but have a practical car too so won't be an everyday car.. The idea of a mid engined British car hard top with classic looks and an America V8 seems the perfect solution!!
I have read through the first 36 pages of threads so getting some idea of things.. I would like more power than the cob but not stupid power.. Thinking 550-650 and a modern chevy this time for reliability and for a change.. Not sure if I would be best off with a Ls3, Ls7 or Ls3 with the edelbrock supercharger that a friend has in his cob and is good for 630hp... Thoughts?... Also I like the gear shifter on the right of the steering wheel like in the demonstrator, but with this engine choice what would be the best gear box choice?... Last two questions.. There seems to be a lot of chat about heat in the rear clam.. With this engine choice would this be an issue I would struggle with and is it easy to overcome?.. And are there AC upgrades available as this seems another common QU?..
Worth mentioning I would use it mainly for road use and some trips to Germany for the nurburg
so comfortable inside but very capable and fun as a whole..
Finally are there any owners near Windsor as would love to see a few finished GTRs and discus what ownership is like..

If you were at Stoneleigh, did you have the chance to talk to Ted and Richard from the Factory? If not, I would suggest a trip up and get a test "fright" with Ted and take some time to talk with them. Regarding engines, the LSx is the way to go today. Tomorrow it may be the new Gen V LTx engines. Regarding gearboxes, the one from the Porsche turbo is a good solution, but if you like and insist for the side shifter another model from the Porsche range will need to be sourced. The Factory can supply all the info you need. In the meantime, I'm sure others will be on here soon, ...when they wake up

If it's primarily for road use - I'd got with a fairly stock LS7 engine, for most mere mortals it's more than up to the job. Massive BHP figures are great for pub bragging rights, but can suck when you're stuck on the M25 doing 5mp for hours on end
As with all things, the higher you tune, the more you will have to deal with other issues such as improved fuelling/cooling etc.
Gearbox wise - Porsche G50 is the 'box of choice for most (rod linked for right hand shift) or something like a cable operated Getrag 6-speed will give you a centre shift option. Ratio considerations dependent on intended usage may dictate too.
As said, get yourself a test drive first so you can form a first hand impression to help you make the right choice - for you!

I run a supercharger and consequently have higher than "normal" temps under the clam with no issues.
Some of the CanAm folk have a different problem whereby hot air from under the clam is drawn forwards into the cabin area causing them some discomfort, I believe some use a wind deflector to improve things.

What engine have you supercharged? And what 'British' BHP and torque figures are you getting out of interest?..I run a supercharger and consequently have higher than "normal" temps under the clam with no issues.

Ultima 427 I agree completely with 3DEE, F.C. and the factory. Under bonnet heat is not an issue. I have 6 years of driving in Southern California at temps up to 115f and no issues. I will say that a good cold air box for the inlet is well worth the effort. Indeed it gets warm enough under the clam 150-165f to leave a lot of horsepower behind. I just had to change my A.C. compressor due to its failure and in the process changed the belt. Both my A.C. tech and I agreed that the old belt was in very good shape and we both agreed that if excessive heat was present over this amount of time and miles that the belt would have shown a lot of cracks which it did not. I had forgot how good the A.C. works when its really up to snuff on the 90 degree day that I returned with the new compressor installed I had the fan speed at position 2 out of 3 and the car was very comfortable. well Keith I am also an old git, but mainly due to the time zone difference (1 hour is not much I admit), my waking hours are probably slightly different than yours. In any case, I need to nap from time to time during the day.
