Posting in General as Chim owners might be able to offer opinions as well. smile

Sacrilege I know, but to pass the Griff's MOT a few weeks, we had to swap out Clive's y piece for the oem catted y. From memory I knew I personally preferred the quality of sound with the catted y piece in, so that's how we've left her. I've had the pre-cats removed from the beginning, and the silencer is oem as well

With Clive's work of art installed she sounded louder and more "angry" (dealer and I agreed on that word! smile ). Some character had been lost though. With the oem y piece re-installed the sound is much more mellifluous, and more importantly, the pops and burbles on the over-run have returned which sounds more interesting inside (and outside) than the continual snarl of before. I did get the occasional bang with Clive's but they were few and far between! Yes, I miss those. smile

BUT - I miss the increased volume, but would love to keep the characterful soundtrack . . . . so, how about tinkering with the silencer, and getting it sleeved, or part-sleeved?

Any thoughts or experience of this tweakery would be welcomed. I'm about to ring my dealer to see what options of silencers they might have in to play around with on my car . . .

The best sound on the RV8 is the original catted Y-piece with a sleeved rear box. Ensure the box has some of its wadding left in though otherwise it resonates terribly!

Although I used the term sleeved, I'm not sure (technically) what that means!!?

Anyone care to explain the sleeved options?

if you remove the end of the silencer you will see there are a couple of inner pipes with holes in em and a bunch of wadding, replace these pipes with solid ones, replace the wadding and weld the end on again

I have my Griff sleeved and it pops and crackles on the over run and sometimes lets out a gun shot when up-shifting.

Compared with removing the main cats is it a similar type of sound, ie angrier or something else? Does it sound deeper when sleeved?

I think it accentuates the normal sound with some pops and crackles as a bonus. It's just louder everywhere through the rev range.

I am in Reading, not too far from you.

Come and have a listen if you like, mine is fully sleeved with main CAT and pre CATs still in.

I am really tempted by a Y Piece but love the pops and bangs smile

Cheers chaps. What do you guys have in the way of cats installed?

As mentioned I have the precats out and the main cats left in.

Mine are all in. Some say it sounds like a tractor but I like it and that's all that counts in my book.

If you decide to keep the OEM CAT I might be interested in your Y Piece?

Hi starmist, I was going to suggest offering it to you because of the above quote! smile

Haven't thought of a price yet, but will let you know maybe during the week.

Many thanks to Frio for showing off his sleeved system to me earlier today. Very much appreciated, and a lovely Griff you have there.

Looks like I'll be sleeving mine then!! biggrin

Having just spoken to my supplying dealer their current approach to sleeving is to leave the wadding out!

Presumably, apart from reducing resonance, once sleeved, wadding shouldn't quieten the sound any more as effectively it's a straight-through system?
