Hi Ted,

I use/read a fair few forums, and I was wondering if it would be possible to implement something I've seen elsewhere on here?

I've seen a forum where it's possible to 'ignore' someone - the fact that they've posted shows up, but not the content. It's not something I ever thought would be handy, but recently there's the odd poster who isn't worth responding to (because it's nothing to do with me), but their comments raise my bloody pressure more than is safe.

It's not anything serious enough to warrant the use of the abuse button, but I disagree so violently with them that I'd be happier not reading anything the have to say when browsing the forums.

Worth doing, or not really?

I've been thinking about adding the same, however on other forum's it got really annoying when the discussion moved towards a comment xxx had made and xxx is the person I desired to ignore.

tbh, there are a few characters on here I have no time for, just like in real life. It's fairly easy not to ready their post, although it would be even easier if the text was made miniture (i.e. it's still in the thread, just very small).

Would this not set a dangerous precedent though, as depending on the forum whole sides of discussions could be lost.

Besides which that, person could swing back towards not annoying you and you'd never know about it...

Or am I missing the point of the type of annoyance caused by the people you wish to block?

No, no - you're quite right, and there's a possibility that I'll find this person less annoying in the future. I'd expect I could judge this from the responses to the posts tho.

It's probably a waste of time, but I find a morbid fascination in reading what they have to say, just to see how annoying I find it. Much like reading a copy of the Daily Mail, to be honest.

To take it a step further (I think I may have mentioned this in the past) how about a hide thread button, much like the hide forum trick, it would allow folks to filter threads they have no intention of reading?

I suppose it could also lead to a "Most Ignored" PHer award at BTaP

I think though in practice the benefit would outweigh the costs of implementation, as (depending on how Ted does it) there will have to be an extra decision made for each message in a thread, which although not a huge CPU effort when done for every read of every message on PH would have a reasoanable impact.

Now having that in "my stuff" would be a good idea.

Am I missing the point somewhat? That this is the internet and thus having your pressure raised by what people write on it suggests taking oneself (and others) just a little bit too seriously?
