Le Mans, Rouen road closure.
Discussion
Hi folks, this is my first post but as I now live in France I will update anyone visiting Le Mans re the bridge closure in the centre of Rouen.
As some of you may know, the Pont de Mathilde bridge was closed due to a vehicle fire in October 2012.
The bridge is still shut and isn't expected to reopen until August. This year I presume!
The route that I have been taking from Calais down to the Mayenne region is via Le Havre and Caen. Not much difference in time compared to the Rouen route. You can still go via Rouen but it can be very congested at certain times of the day.
Anyway, to all that are going, have a safe journey and a great time.
Regards. Les.

Good to know thanks. So,is it not an idea to come off the A28 just after the tunnel in Rouen and go through/via the D938 and cross the river further along instead?
I did that on Monday at 6pm and there was no major problem. Also if you want to follow a scenic route via Evreax this route makes more sense.Traveling towards Calais, the locally signed diversion is a bit more complex, but worked fine on Sunday afternoon.
I updated the maps on my Garmin GPS just before, but the closure is still not recognised, which is pretty pathetic, 18 months after the event.
There does not seem to be any remedial work actually taking place at the moment.
Designing a replacement and getting approvals is big element that could take time in the UK, but just getting on with it and seeking approvals as it proceeds seems beyond the system here.
During hard times, not getting fired, takes precedence.

I have been travelling on the A28 alot recently through Rouen to Le Mans, rather than taking the deviation off to the A29. But after crossing the river, as RDJohn says, I go on the N338 which takes you on a ring road around Rouen. Never had an issue on this route. One point on this route is you get to drive along the top straight of the old F1 Rouen race track "Les Essarts" just before you join the A13, although you won't know it.

We used the suggested diversion via Yvetot, last year, both ways, and it was spot on. Lots of posts about it prior to the 2013 race.
Yup I used that route for the Classic a couple of years ago and will be using it again this year. One thing though - does anyone know of somewhere decent to get lunch in Yvetot? Despite being a largish town it seemed to be devoid of anywhere to eat. We ended up in a bar and the croque monsieur was "cooked" in a microwave - hardly haute cuisine!

Try the Brasserie in this place.
Which place?Les, Am I right in thinking that the bridge might be reopened now? I ask as up until yesterday google maps showed the bridge as incomplete/broken. Today I noticed the 'complete' bridge on the map. Tried different browsers with no cache and the same result. Is this all too wishful thinking?

According to their official site ( http://www.pontmathilde.com/travaux/la-nouvelle-tr... ) the final section of new bridge is being installed during June (with a completion date still planned for August 2014) which might be why the map now shows a complete bridge on the map.
If you try a route plan through Rouen then Google Maps still won't send you across the bridge.
