I'm looking at getting a proper AV setup soon, starting with the new Sony STR-DN1050 as the basis.
Until now I've been using a cheapish Pioneer 5.1 setup, originally made for the xbox 360.
My TV is a 6 year old Panasonic plasma, it still gives a nice image, but lacks HMDI ports and has no smart features to speak of, so the Sony unit will help with this.

When it comes to speakers I've no idea where to start. Ideally I don't want to spend a fortune, maybe £200-300 with an eye on upgrading bit by bit over the next few years. Any suggestions?

I'm still daily using the 'starter' floor standers I bought 12 years ago rather than blowing the budget on a basic/limited surround system. These and a second hand, quality amplifier I think were a far better bet than a mini system that would have been bin fodder after a few years. Slowly added the rest of the setup over a couple of years and have only subsequently changed source and amplifier.

Richer sounds often have packaged surround speakers in an around this money too if you did want to go straight in. It's well worth signing up to their emails.
