Just arrived home on the back of a breakdown truck.

Left the job I was at, had to reverse off the drive up a slight slope, power seemed missing and it took a few goes. Thought maybe it was the clutch (?).
Later into my drive I was driving along. Revs and power seemed lacking under pressing the accelerater pedal. No real increase in speed.

Anyhow, a few corners later, the revs didn't drop back down upon changing gear. I pulled over and turned the van off with the key. The engine continued to run whilst black smoke bellowed out of the exhaust and filled the road. After a while the engine stopped and the smog lifted. All was at piece again apart from a now buggered van.

Knowing nothing of the mechanical side of cars, is there a way to diagnose if this could be engine, turbo (?), or anything else at fault. I've not tried to start it again.

It's an 07 Ford Connect van. 1.9 TDCI

Maybe the turbo let go and let oil in or the oil got in from the engine itself - but either way what made the engine stop running? frown

"...until it destroys itself..." Loving that.

Definitely running on its own oil.

How many miles?
Regular service and oil changes?

High mileage and irregular oil changes can lead to worn piston rings.

07, ~70K miles. Bought ~6 months ago from a trader. Ex gas board or electrical board or similar so has history. I've not had it serviced in the 6 months of owning it though.

You are probably in luck then with a turbo failure so just expensive rather than a write off.

In either case the best thing to do is very literally stand on the brakes while leaving it in gear and do not press clutch to stop it and stall the engine.
