Has anyone of you ever been?

A friend invited me to Indianapolis and while checking my schedule I've noticed I could go in to weeks.
Is it fun to watch?

yes, have been but not since the so so days of the early IRL. Great event in a big sporting event sort of way, ie lots of not your usual race fans in the stands. Warning though, keep the Monday free incase of rain delays- the year I went it was rained off till the Tuesday but I was far away by then.

Went last year. Loved it. Can't wait to go again. It might not be the giant it once was but still very special.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been - sadly it is a poor imitation of what it was in the CART/turbo era. The IZOD/Verizon Indycar organization isn't organized and Tony George is a .

It was 'pole day' last weekend and the speedway was like a ghost town. When I used to go for the qualifying and ceremony the weekend before the race in the late 80's, there'd be 60-80,000 fans in attendance.

Sad as it is to state this, but today the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race is a better event.

The whole thing is a bit lame these days - but still a spectacle if you've never been before.

Haven't been to Indy since the F1 days. Never been to the Indy 500.

Any pearls of wisdom? How early should we get there? Any tips regarding parking, etc.

Bit late now obviously, but I went last year. Driving in parking was easy, getting in to the track was horrendous! The queues were awful. I expect they've been better this year, as last year they had the Boston marathon attack and were very cautious. I sat on the main straight towards the first corner end, but still in front of the pits. It was good fun to see the pitstops, and the view was much better than I feared (I booked late). Getting out of the carpark was awful though! It took hours.

All good fun though, and really glad I went! I also went to a Pacers v Heat NBA playoff game straight after the 500 finished biggrin
