If they left the car looking visually the same and the interior the same as original then yes. Absolutley want.

But its been ruined by the wheels, grill, seats, well, all the interior. Makes it look like a kit car.

I wonder why it only has a four speed auto? The same engine was used in the R129 SL60 and that came with a five speed 'box. The power figures are a little understated too, out of the box the M119 6.0 V8 produced around 410 bhp.

I really like it, though I would prefer to lose the alloys.

customer wants it... would you really turn down £1 million building it, even if it went against all your principles?

Drivetrain better suited to a replica car. Would be excellent, fast user friendly gorgeous car you can crash without crying.

An unmolested car would sell for more than £1.0m. There's one on Mobile.de for €1.4m. Whoever the 11 people are that are converting their pristine 300 SL's, they clearly have money to burn as in addition to the cost of the conversion they are halving the value of their cars.

Your mistaking what Im saying...

Its obviously one of the UAE royal families or such that have money to burn.

But if someone came to you with the 300SL and threw £1million at you asking to place the modern drive train etc into the 300SL, would you turn around and say no or just take the money?

Matters not to them that the car is worth 700k or 1.4m unmolested, they have just paid you 1m to modernise it.

oh dear I felt mortified when I saw this. Money and taste are not good bed fellows are they.

Its like cutting out the face of the mona lisa and replacing it with Peppa Pig (because your daughter wants it that way) or buying a £2000 tailor made suit but wearing trainers with it because they are more comfortable.

I would pay 50K for the shell and try to restore the original heartbeat.

Love the Peppa pig comment; that would be a no-brainer in our house!

My guess is that this Gullwing would be more sympathetically received if it were rolling around on more subtle wheels. It is , after all, an original rather than a fiberglass creation, and would make a wonderful European express for someone.

I understand the lawyers at MB are trawling classifieds for replica classic Mercs and applying through the courts to have them destroyed. There is one such car at Hofmanns I believe.

In the 90s Autocar had a small grainy "spotted" type photograph of one of these AMG Gullwings being loaded on a plane bound for the Sultan of Brunei (allegedly). It was a bit of a mystery car at first, one of his "secret" coachbuilder projects, and must have been one of, if not THE, first of the short production run. IIRC it had the flatter 90s AMG alloys instead of these spokey variety. It looked stunning IMHO externally, as been said best of both worlds, although I agree some of the modern interior mods coule be better executed.

There are tons of Gullwings about, high end cars shows like Essen are awash with them to the point of boredom. The world can stand the "loss" of a few originals, like Ferraris they will endure to the end of civilisation due to their value. I'm more concerned when a Vauxhall Carlton gets scrapped TBH...

These cars were converted in 2001, at which time you could pick up a Gullwing for around £100k, and probably much less for a restoration project.

Although it seems a shame to defile such an iconic car, there were around 1300 Gullwings originally produced, so it is hardly a rare car compared to something like a Ferrari of the same period.

Its a Mercedes take on a Singer911 except the Singer is by far better finished.

WTF would put a walnut wheel and dash in a SL Gullwing?

What a bargain!

Change the wheels and enjoy years of blasting round Europe in a unique piece of machinery.
