quick cars with ditch finders on
Discussion
I've got R888s on my Quantum at the moment, it's pushing about 250bhp per tonne and to be honest, they're s
t. They dont grip all that well in the cold and wet, but what do you expect for £130 each.
Oooh, yeah - I forgot, they're so much better in the dry than the cold and wet.
People who say ditchfinders, I can kind of agree with to an extent, but finding a ditch means you've driven past the limits of the tyres. You can pretty much do that with any tyre, it's just the line is lower with technically worse grip.
I dont think there's a bad combination, I had Nankangs on my Elan M100, and they gripped fine in all situations. I think they were £55 each. I put scrappie specials on my g/f's KA @ £12/corner, and they've taken us everywhere and didnt fall off the road once.

When I bought my Golf the dealer had put a pair of 'Event' tyres on it. I looked up the price, £38 each for 225/40R18s
. They were binned after two days for a nice matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3s.
Unfortunately to most people a tyre is a tyre so they just put the cheapest possible on not understanding that there is actually a difference.

I just bought a Supra turbo complete with ditchfinders. Saying 'it spins the rears in third' sounds cool until you realise why. It was pointless having half the power it did with those tyres.
I replaced them with a set of Kuhmos, a name a lot of people assume is rubbish, but I find are pretty good.

Theres me expecting something like a 997 CarreraS or something.
An SLK350 lmao.
OP only said 'quick' cars. It's all relative. 0-60mph in sub 6s is quick in most people's eyes.An SLK350 lmao.
Anyway, back to the OP, I suppose many people view tyres as a basic commodity and buy on price. Also, many people drive well within the car's limits, so premium tyres are not always maximized on their potential.
I'm noticing a growing trend towards reverse snobbery on PH. It seems people like to announce that they use bad tyres in order to elevate their driving skill. That only ditchfinder drivers can stay within tyre limits seems a bizarre thing to think, as surely all the quality tyre buyers would be complaining about crashing on those too if that were the issue.

Nothing wrong with the current range of Nankangs (except the unforunate presumptions people make about them because of their Far Eastern sounding name).
Take tire snobbery somewhere else, my little Fiat has 4 Nankangs on and they're a lot better than Pirelli P6000's.

This is a fair point.

I had R888s on the Caterham and on a cold, wet Welsh mountain road, they'd have you seeking a ditch quicker than the Yoko A539s. But on a warm summer evening hoon, the reverse could be said.
