I'm looking for a workbench for the garage for general tinkering duties. I've seen a few on places like Machine Mart, but they look suspiciously cheap and crap. Not looking for anything too massive and needs to be something that comes disassembled and boxed up for shipping to my gaff in France. I thought of making something, but as my carpentry skills are on a par with my ability to fly, thought it best to buy something. Anyone care to make some suggestions?

Ebay. It's a good source of cheap kitchens if you're not fussy about looks.

France! Buy some oak and a box of big screws, Oak is silly cheap here. Make your own.

For a barn I rent with others we used 2x3 wood for uprights and cross beams
Used floor grade chipboard for work top and shelf
I built work area with storage shelf underneath and above head height

I don't think the suggestion was to use dovetail joints
But I'm guessing that you want something that is not too agricultural in appearance.

Saw, drill and some screws. Job done, an indestructible work bench that will only ever get harder and harder

Made mine from a few 2x2" posts and some old fire doors all screwed together and to the wall, very solid and quite happy with an engine on it.

Wouldn't bother buying something, you will be much better off making something that does what you need.
