Dog insurance - post spay operation?

We have two Labradors, male one that is as tough as old boots that we have had from a puppy, and we decided to adopt a a older one as we thought it would be better as there were so many dogs that need homes.
We got a problem dog off gumtree from a family that couldn't cope with her. She is highly strung and a lot of work but we have had her now for over a 18 months.
We got her spayed a year ago and notice in the last 6 months she some times wets herself a little bit occasionally.
We now feel that this is getting worse, as in 2 times a week she has wazzed on the sofa.
We have never had dog insurance and wondered what would happen if we got some now before we took her to the vet and declared the issue?
Would it be valid as the operation was before the insurance was taken out? how long after you start insurance is reasonable to claim on it? I am happy to carry on as is for a month or so if it means we are insured.
I have had a look into the medications and it seems that is would be around £20 a month if we had to pay for it but it might be a series of operations which I am not sure if we could.
Any advise as to how pet insurance works would be gratefully received.

Insurers tend not to cover pre-existing conditions or anything which arises within the first fourteen days of cover.
So your vet would tell them it started last week say and thus your insurer will not cover it.
However, if the vet has done some damage of some kind leading to this when they undertook the spay, then I'd be asking them to cover the costs of fixing it.

They have said it is a common issue with dogs and not their fault but would subsidies it but not pay for any operations.So your vet would tell them it started last week say and thus your insurer will not cover it.
