I've always had a stomach acid problem, it's nothing major, and because it's not something that bothers me too much to the point where I will head to ER so I've just left it for the best part of 15 years.

Basically I carry a packet of Gaviscon with me where ever I go, I don't need it every day or after every meal since the acid problem doesn't always come up, this acid problem happens once or twice a week, and sometimes it will pop up at random times during the day, I've had my throat burning from acid at 4-5am while I was sleeping which caused me to wake up, I've had it straight after a meal, or sometimes 6 hours after a meal.

Now what I want to know is, is there anything else that I can eat/drink instead of Gaviscon?

I've tried milk before, but I'll get the runsboxedin, well...I can drink milk, just not a whole cup of milk...

I've also tried eating a light meal to help when the acid problem attacks at random hours, but sometimes it just makes the situation worse...

Is there any home remedies that I can use?

I ask as I never really got on with the taste and texture of chewing a Gaviscon tablet after all these years...but it's the only thing I know that works well...

Sounds like you could have Gastiritis.

My missus has it and its now under control due to prescription drugs - Lansoprazole I believe. Works a treat but isnt long term - supposedly it will settle the amount of acid down to normal levels within a few months which she is approaching which means she can stop taking it. Horrible thing for her though - constantly feeling sick etc etc.

Your GP will prescribe something appropriate im sure.

Get yourself to your doctor and get referred to a gastroenterologist. I have had stomach problems intermitently over the last 2 years from pains in my stomach to slight discomfort which whenever it happened had a severe impact on me. Finally bit the bullet and got referred to a gastroenterologist, have had a few appointments and finally it looks like I may have finally got it sorted, fingers crossed.

Well worth it

Do you smoke and or drink lots of coffee?

Would still see the GP and see what the issue is.

I had it quite bad but like yours it was only once in a while, maybe once or twice a week... Gave up the smoking on saturday and now everything has disappeared and it seems it was the smoking all along that was causing it.

From the flemmy throat and what felt like food stuck in in after eating, to acid indigestion after a salad.

All gone now in the last week since kicking the habit, wish I did it a while ago now as I was suffering quite bad over the last 6-12 months.

Defo see your GP and get your stools tested for H pylori. Very common bacteria that can cause reflux/indigestion symptoms which is easily treatable.

You should probably have H Pylori excluded as above

Its also worth checking out Barry Marshall - proper Aussie way to bag a Nobel prize smile

See your GP. Quite likely they'll want to have a peek with an endoscope.

Your symptoms can probably be completely controlled with omeprazole or similar.

Smoking, alcohol, carrying a bit of weight all aggravate things like this, if any of those apply.

Wow, never expected that, might go and have it looked at.

With regards to smoking/drinking, the acid problem started before I smoke and drink, it was actually worse before I started smoking and drinking...

If it's bacterial then alcohol might well kill off some of the bacteria causing a temporary reduction in symptoms...

Best to go get it sorted though, frequent reflux increases your risk of oesophageal cancer significantly.

Omeprazole might do the trick so go and see your doctor for the best advice.

If they do decide to have a look with an endoscope, you will be offered the option of a sedative.

Have you kept a diet diary? Do certain foods make it worse? It took me 15 years to realise that wheat made me feel awful. It wasn't til I have it up that I realised the heartburn, indigestion and pain had also given up

hehe

In the meantime maybe keep a large carton of natural yoghurt in the fridge to hoover up any acid when you get the 4am burn; maybe try a week of yakult to get some upper class bacteria in you...if nothing else might make the value of your organs increase, should the worst happen. First time I knocked a coupla bottles of yakult back I had an excellent poo.

That stuff is delicious! (yakult, not poo)

Defo get it looked at. Sounds like a problem with your sphincter. No, not that one. You don't want acid routinely entering the oesophagus or you'll end up like my dad (RIP!).

As someone suggested, if you can't handle milk, defo try natural yoghurt. You may find the ultra cheap value/basics version is just as useful for you. I'd also sleep with the upper body slightly elevated and avoid eating just before bedtime.

Me too. Changed my life. Had got so used to the discomfort that I only realised how bad it was when it stopped.

Also, you can get Buscopan over the counter which helps a lot with cramping.

You need to get ye hence to the physician, young man! One possibility is that you might have Barretts Oesophagus, which is what my brother has and is unpleasant to say the least. Mind you. it's not bad if you want loose some weight as he went down 3 1/2 stone...
