Apparently ahead of pending break up of F1 in afew years, Ecclestone is trying to trade mark words 'Grand Prix' in Britain and Europe.

What hope does he have.

None, we have the "Snooker Grand Prix" numerous toys, games using the words. F1 teams like "Jordan Grand Prix", model makers like Grand Prix Models.

The man is a odious little money grabbing hobbit and I wish him every success in failing to acheive this and the sooner F1 is rid of him the better. You may say he's done so much for the sport, but imagine how much more could have been done without him.

Quite agree!!

I think Bernies is the same old story. He DID do great things for the sport but his love of deals, and ultimatley, money had made him lose way of what he was trying to achieve in the first place

Roll on GPWC. And I can't beleive i'm saying that!

He's tried to "Trade Mark" F1 in the past and was only partially successful. If he got the rights on "Grand Prix" he'd be after the term "Motor Racing" next.

What would the French (and other French speaking nations) do if they were not allowed the term "Grand Prix" - all it means is "Big Prize". Up until the 1980, the Germans always referred to their GP as the "Grosser Preis Von Deutchland".

He'll be lucky, Grand Prix is a generic term these days and it would be difficult to say you had an exclusive license over it, even in the area of sporting events. I mean even snooker has a Grand Prix!

If Microsoft have to struggle to protect their copyright on 'Windows' because it's now such a common computing term, then he hasn't a leg to stand on(not that he has much legs anyway, the evil little dwarf).

As well as "Grand Prix" he is also trying to trademark "British Grand Prix".

My hatred for this man is rising to new levels.

For christs sakes how much money does Bernie make from F1 when he is willing to put up £300 million just like that to prevent an F1 breakaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

crash.net said:

Bernie Ecclestone has attempted to shrug off Monday's court ruling, which found in favour of the three banks holding a 75 per cent stake in Formula One, by making a substantial cash offer to the sport's ten teams in an attempt to prevent a breakaway series.

Although the two issues are only loosely linked, Ecclestone chose to show defiance in the face of the setback he received in London's High Court - when he was told that the boardroom majority he held in SLEC was unjust - by attending a meeting of F1 teams and making an offer he hopes will tempt those present to turn their backs on the GPWC series being pieced together by four of the major manufacturers involved in F1.

According to sources, Ecclestone has said that he is prepared to put around £300million on the table to prevent the breakaway - and to prevent his stakeholding, as well as that of the banks, from being rendered worthless. And, whilst he also told reporters that the High Court ruling amounted to little in the scheme of things, Ecclestone also intimated that he was prepared to work with the banks to ensure the future of Formula One.

He has more chance of trademarking "Forumla 1", "Formula One" and "F1". Arguably these are far more commercially valuable than "Grand Prix" anyway.

According to the report I read in the paper, the answer to your question is £2.4 billion
