I'm an old b*gger but I like computer games.

I've given up trying to get my brilliant but ancient games to work on my new computer with new OS. Loads of effort, no results.

My most played game is Civ2 (used to win regularly on Deity) followed by Champ Manager 3 (took Luton to Euro success and got a statue built outside the ground!). Space strategy games are good too. RTS not too bad, Age of Kings etc. but 2nd choice. Replayability is great.

I'm miserable so not interested in stranger multiplayer. I hate Steam.

I just want to buy a game, crack open a few tinnies and play on my PC in single player mode with no internet required. "Just one more turn" is my thing.

So what do I buy in 2014?

(Am I like the bloke who just wants a mobile with numbers for phoning?)

Any Total War game from Rome on-wards (but particularly Rome & Medieval 2), turn based strategy with real time battles.

This a thousand times, damn is that game a time sink. Even better if you have other humans (friends not random internet people) to play it with and I HATE turn based games, but Civ 5 is annoyingly good smile

Thanks folks.

I think I'll buy them all...but looking on Amazon, Civ 5 has loads of 1 star reviews and they say you do need Steam, which is what peed me off last time I tried a "new" game. I really don't want to feck about with all that registering on-line shi-ite. I want to put a disc in and that's it.

X Com looks right up my street. Hmm, which version to buy.

Keep the recommendations coming!

Endless Space is one I've not tried but sounds like it'd owe you time before long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw87CXwjpKI

It's not brand new, 2012 I think.

Everything else I can think of or find or even have experience of are RTS games...

I don't know about new games but Skyrim or Fallout 3 will keep you going for hours - it won't be "just one more game" it will be "just 5 minutes more" and then two hours later........

Fallout 3 is one I kept going back to but the older Xcom I did like. Not played the new one, waiting for a price deal on it. Transferring from a PC to Mac means I have lost a n=few good uns. But what I do miss on the Mac is Silent Service III. V was also good but needed an internet connection to run. Sub sim, very good.

Not turn based but can be sort of played like it and it is resolutely single player;

Give FTL a go. It's a brilliant little thing with a sense of humour a mile wide.

+1 for X-COM, I've completed it three times!

For RTS Supreme Commander 1 and the Forged Alliance expansion is about as good as it gets Imo.

If it is vanilla (no expansion Civ 5) then that was very poor, the expansions have really brought the game alive.

Medieval 2 Total War.
It's a turn based strategy game that takes in Europe/North Africa/Middle East/East America. It has 17 factions I think maybe more. Brilliant game, you can play it by just simulating the battles or you can fight them yourself controlling your armies units. You control your empires cities, economy, military and infrastructure building. The gold edition version comes with the Medieval 2 and its expansions which are Britannia which involves England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Denmark. Crusades campaign, Teutonic Campaign and the American campaign which has the Spanish forces and the native american factions.

Race Into Space. It's a free version of the 90s Buzz Aldrin Race Into Space game, with the game mechanics tweaked a bit.

Civ Rev is good if you don't want anything too serious in the way of micro management but still a challenge.

I concur with all of the above and add Sins of a Solar Empire which, for Trek fans out there, has a couple of awesome Star Trek total conversion mods available. boxedin

XCOM - Enemy within is a huge improvement on the Enemy Unknown. The story comes alive and the game is less linear.

However, if you're an older gamer and perhaps enjoyed the Baldurs Gate series of games I'm positive you would find Shadowrun Returns rewarding. It's turn based, story driven and in a Blade runner-esque setting.

Faster Than Light is also great except not strictly turn based but definitely capable of being dropped at a moments notice (provided you pause first) and picked up when you're ready.
