Start of Panama, playing the arpeggios with pinch harmonics, is that an unmuted G string I hear flapping away?

Oh dear! biggrin

I hope you're joking... confused

Probably one the best VH tunes... smokin

eta. I also like how they didn't track a second rhythm guitar behind the solo, so it's nice and live sounding

Well obviously it's a bit tongue in cheek I love the song (we're covering it in our band) but I can't believe he let that G string ring out, and I can't believe they didn't do another take!

Listened several times, I can't hear it. Although to be fair I'd never heard that song before, might need a bit more listening.

At 28 seconds precisely: "twang!"

These kind of things get left in all the time, there is a bum note early in a RHCP song - the first track on Californication I think, you hear Flea hit a half tone lower than he should and then slide it up for a quick correction. Michael Manring left a really obvious one in one of his songs, can't remember the track or the album but it stuck out like a sore thumb every time I heard it - it served as a great reminder that despite how incredible the virtuosity of the music was, it's still a human playing it and humans make errors.

That's what makes some tunes great is the mistakes left in. Now with protools you just copy/paste the buggery out the good takes...

My favourite: The Police - So Lonely
Bass bum note and correction after the key change at 2.53

Well I think think the RHCPs are awful musicians at the best of times. They are very sloppy and that singer can't sing in tune. 'orrible.

That police thing doesn't surprise me either, their drummer was awful apparently and Andy Summers may have had a groove but the whole of that solo you're talking about kills me every time with it's mewling, whiny, out of key horribleness!

They should be ashamed of themselves grumpy

Van Halen has to be the most surprising though. Could you imagine Mr Vai letting something like that get through?

Um, no it isn't, mistakes are mistakes. That Police track was just st, really shoddy.

Older recordings might be less clean, you might even be able to hear little hisses and scrapes you couldn't now from instruments, but cocking up and being to lazy to rerecord is pretty bad IMHO.

Okay got it Driller, you have the ears of an owl to pick that up though!
Loads of mileage in this thread, I'm listening for bum notes every where now!

Here's a couple:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5q55yyPDg4

Stray Cats, Rock this Town. Brian Setzer is a guitar god in my eyes, he often recorded in one take so they creep in. At 2:07 a little tiny missed fretting and at 2:40 a lovely "crunk" open string hit.

I'm with Stu on this though, these little glitches just add to the feeling of the song.

And here's another:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQGXa3FiXKM

Smokey, surely the best black male vocalist in history, for me anyway. He did this in one take and there's a lovely wobble at 2:26. I feel a complete st for even pointing this out because of the pure brilliance of this performance but in the interests of the thread it has to be done!

Christ I just broke an E string playing along to that track, gets me where it hurts.

Stewart Copeland....?? Awful ?? eekeek Not many drummers or musicians would agree with that..
Sting and Stewart Copeland allegedly has some issues back in the 80's between themselves regarding tempos but I think they respected each others skills..

I'm not sure how recording and band savvy you, but when you work on song or an album, there's lots of issues to deal with, especially back then when recording to 2" tape, editing and redoing sections takes time, and studio time is very expensive. Also, when you work with a song you get very close to it and often miss parts that stand out to other hearing it fresh, as you hear it differently over time.

I heard Tubular Bells recently for the first time in years and the recording and playing is all over the place, but that's part of the charm of some older stuff.
I personally get very bored with the sound of some modern recordings where it's been over compressed, radio and iPod EQ'd, and ProTooled to buggery...

fwiw i'm not even sure that can be considered a 'mistake'. Despite his groundbreaking technique, the thing that separates EVH from the countless 80s 'virtuoso' guitarists is that he's a genuine warts and all rock guitarist. There's loose stuff like this in loads of his playing, much like hendrix, page, et al.

I'm fairly savvy, but then I'm quite good as not fking up is one of those little priorities I have as a musician.

I read an article which explained that when they were recording (it was on different floors of a house I think) he was unable to keep a constant tempo.

Am I mixing him up with someone else?

That is definitely a "mistake" and at the least sloppy. Don't get me wrong I really like EVH so was really disappointed to hear this.

I'm sure he is reading this thread in Coldwater Canyon thinking "if only i'd not been so sloppy".

You must be easily disappointed.
