Distance warning on new models

Had a loan new e class coupe while mine went in for an engine malfunction.
This new loan car had a distance warning gizmo that beeped if you were too close to the vehicle infront. Great in theory but so annoying as it couldn't tell I was overtaking or another vehicle is approaching from the opposite side. You had to turn the thing off each time you start the engine!
