Virtual Model Railway

I'm looking for a train sim, particularity the one that you can create your own tracks, scenery, etc, for a birthday present for an early teen boy. I have no idea what is available on the market. He had one called 'Make your own Model Railway' but it's too old now and it can't run on his PC. Any suggestions appreciated. TIA!

I had a play with one of the early releases about 10 years ago, allowed you to build or drive, was a little bit clunky and took some getting used to but probably moved on since then.
They do/did have a habit of releasing upgrade packs constantly but there is/was a lot of free content created by players to add new vehicles and landscape objects etc.
Likely a demo available to check if it's suitable.
Edit - also checked out OpenTTD at http://www.openttd.org/en/ which is a great game that is more about running a transport company than building a train set.
