993 cabrio... worst case scenario... advices needed

hi all,
i am not a 993 expert at all despite the fact that i can't deny it's a wonderful car!!!! To cut the story short, while i was looking to buy a gen 997 convertible, a good friend called me because the family he works for has a 1994 C2 convertible with 90k miles to sell... they owned the car for the last 10 years...
i did not see the car yet, i understand it has partial official Porsche dealer services and partial indy garages history... car is in "ök" shape, one back light cracked, leather interiors show their age and the roof has some age mark and a couple of cigarette size wholes....

Seems like i might be able to get the car for less than 20k if i really want it, how much should i budget to bring it back in decent shape? And how much should i budget if the car due to age and mileage suddenly needs an engine rebuild?

for the last 10 years car was driven by a woman..

Not easy to say. But I'll have a stab at 5K to make it nice, £9K for a full engine build at UK prices

Sounds right but I would expect engine to be pretty Ok. Rust on screen, air con and general fan issues, tired suspension more likely. No idea on hood but understand they are simpler than Targas.

Oil leak and smoke can be simple mend or engine out. Unlikely to be internal problem.

Essential to get Indy who understands 993s.

You really need to get it inspected if you are not conversant with the model - could be a bargain - could be a total money pit?????

They are great cars. I swapped my 997 4S for a 993 cab and don't regret it for a minute. You can get the seats recolonised for about £300, a new roof isn't that much as there are lots of manufacturers around, wheels easy to get refurbished etc.

Agree with other suggestions on here - get it inspected by a good Indy. Mine is looked after by project nine in Marden. Highly recommended if you are in south London or Kent. Hope it checks out. If so you won't regret it.

Got to love the spelling on this place.

OP, 5k minimum, as Graeme said. They do have a habit of biting one on one's bottom though, so beware. Mind you, if the aircon goes bottom's up, you can always open the roof.

Forget the engine rebuild bks on a 993. They dont need one and can easily reach 200k untouched.

Concentrate on the condition and running gear - a full suspension and set up will be near £2k. From how you describe it I wouldn't want to pay near £20k as they are least popular of the range and as you can see from the classifieds 993 and 964 listings are littered with them.

Plus expecting a 997 and driving/living with a 993 is a different experience so know what you're getting into first.

An inspection from a Porsche specialist might cost £300 but could help you negotiate 10x that amount off the price.
