Crankcase breather filter help please
Discussion
Hi,
Nice drive (albeit Wet!) to north Wales yesterday but my car is belching smoke on overrun.
I've just taken the pipe from plenum to breather off the top of the breather and it does look quite manky in there and I wonder if it's blocked causing oil to be drawn into cylinders due to vacuum pressure on overrun.
I can't get the breather off the rocker cover (is it a pull or screw off?) but is it safe to leave the plenum to breather disconnected at the top of the breather side?
Thanks in advance.

The vent pulls off its tight
The flame trap unscrews there's some seal wool type stuff in there give it a wash
With brake cleaner and let it evaporate before you fire it up you can swill the pipes
Aswell but don't leave any in the pipe or trap or you may have a very hi Reving and bang of a engine

The placcie cap with foam element just unclips - the steel part is a press fit in the cover, it will twist out. Will probably clean up ok and the centrehole can be poked clear with a small paperclip or similar - don't increase the dia of the hole as it is pretty important to keeping the evacuation system in balance. make sure the flame trap and lines to the plenum are not gunked up.
Smoke on overrun might also mean the valve stem seals need changing... they get hard and crispy over the years. Possible to do with the heads in situ but far easier if you pull the heads.

Thanks all.
I've ordered new rubber breather pipes as they are cheap enough and will clean out the mushroom vent. Strangely enough I don't have a sponge filter under the cap of the mushroom so have ordered that along with the pipes (it is probably easy easy to make one up but it was under £2).
Fingers crossed.
