You can still have quite a bit of fun and get 30mpg. My 01 WRX PPP wagon is returning 32 on my current daily commute which is not the time for a "hoolie", it gave me 35mpg on a recent 750 mile drive from Berkshire to Munich (99% motorway) at an average speed of 77mph.I don't think there is much around that is old enough to fit in the £5000 bracket that will do 30mpg and push 200 horse power.
They only started working out how to do that relatively recently.
(If you're talking about 30mpg motorway, that opens things up a bit. If you're doing mostly motorway though, you might as well go diesel in my opinion. Mid range pull wins on the motorway, after all.)
You will get some hopeful people claiming improbable mpg from 200hp+ cars.
You will get other hopeful people suggesting cars that your £5000 will only buy a knackered example of.
Personally I'd think in terms of 0-60 rather than outright power. If you want to get some speed and 30mpg from a £5000 car you might want to think light - eg Mk3 MR2.
