There is a small piece in the Sunday Times business section about the demand for coding skills. Someone claims to have learned to design and build websites on a 12 week course with a training firm called General Assembly. Then earned the £7000 course fee back in three weeks, having got 4 job offers before she finished the course.

The General Assembly course looks decent. But for an entry level web developer taking home £7000 in three months would be good going, let alone 3 weeks. Quite apart from the problem of getting a job without commercial experience.


Has anyone any experience of General Assembly courses or of taking on their graduates?

The demand in the industry is for people who are good not just people that can write code/script, honestly 12 weeks is not long enough to learn the skills required.

Have a look what junior web developers get paid, not a lot. The persons example cited is someone who probably had past experience in similar fields.

More money for experienced guys to come and sort out their fk ups? Happy days.

I'd like to see the offers for 7k in 3 weeks too! Although I guess it's technically possible contracting - £7000 / 15 (working days in a month) = £466/day, but I don't know anyone who'd get that day rate with a few weeks of experience!
