The south of Luxembourg is regularly on lockdown due to bicycle races and it is horrible.
First of all, driving a car is hardly fun these days on a public road, but with half a country locked down for some grown men in tights to race their bicycles around as fast as they can is silly and makes commuting or visiting relatives f**ks**t.
Should also be said that during the races, a lot of amateurs decide that now is the time for a spirited ride on the roads not closed and make it even sh***ier!
Also, Luxembourg provides cyclists with special cycling paths along most major roads and along some scenic views that all added together are longer than the whole of our country's "Autobunnen", our highways.
It just boggles the mind.

Yes.This is the stupidest cycling post on GG for some time, and that's saying something. I wonder what problem the OP really has with bicycles, since nobody is stupid enough to really think an event with a few hundred thousand following, and (depending on estimates) a few million pounds generated, should be cancelled because a support car nearly crashed into a railing.

There is a yearly charity bike race/ride near me and it is a bloody menace.
Not an event like in the OP but a two wheeled version of a marathon or a fun run, you have a mx of club cyclists and individuals.
The roads are not closed, several hundred of them just ride a long route with a far as I can tell very little police presence.
A potentially lethal mix of fast riders focused on time, ordinary cyclists but the type who switch from path to road, use zebra crossings ignore cycle lanes, and more ordinary folks who appear rarely to ride, red faced fat blokes seconds from a heart attack wobbling dangerously I'm the road at 2 miles an hour.
It is my job as a driver to take responsibility for my actions. Any mishap would bound to be seen as the cars fault with 20 braying accusing ard had wearing Lycra clad won't someone think of the children it's all for charity "witnesses" do doubt happy to tae the bikers point of view. On the one occasion I got caught up in the race there was screwed of near accidents every few miles. I got off the race route and out of their was ASAP.
Riders sending pedestrians, kids dogs , into a flap charging up avements at 20 odd mies an hour bikes 4 abreast on a NSL stretch of road, bikes up the left side of cars, riders chatting, not looking what they are doing.
But it's all in aid of a good cause, so you'd look like a
if you said anything.
By all means have these events, but on closed roads. If that isn't practical then don't hold the race.
