Left or right? Integrale or quattro...

You're after the ultimate 1980s four-wheel drive rally inspired performance car, and are offered one of these. Which would you choose?



Depends on the time of the day for me - and the fact I have an Integrale may skew my opinions, but I'd be keen to hear what PHers think!

Very easy decision.
The Audi. It won't break as much, in my opinion it looks better and the steering wheel is on the side of the car that suits uk roads.

It's interesting that back in 1988 when Autocar tested them both, they went for the Integrale - for its driving pleasure - despite being half the price of the Audi.

i have owned both but tbh i do not think i would want to own either again, i reject the lancia cause it just kept breaking down and i suspect the quattro will be slow and wallowy compared to modern cars, i would rather get an RS2

its like the old Evo v Scobby debate, you pick the Evo/Integrale for driver involvement but most people would go for the scooby/audi as there easier to live with

Anyone here had either? And want to share their experiences?

As an Integrale owner, I'll say that it's nowhere near as flaky as I'd expected it to be, and so far - touch wood - it's never broken down. Also, parts seem pretty easy to get hold of - not something you could say about the Audi.

Intergrale for me. If you'd said quattro Sport, it would be that.

if I ever have enough spare funds I'll probably buy one. A sport Quattro would be nice but... there is a slight price issue

The Audi, mainly because the steering wheel is on the side that allows easier overtaking. I overtake a lot.

Integrale, no question about it.


Much better steering 'feel', smaller more nimble and overall much more fun to drive.

Also no choice but to have the steering wheel on the correct side. I can't help thinking that RHD versions of cars originally designed to be LHD are often bodged and have poor ergonomics or other compromises.

quattro for me. I do love the 'grale. but as a rallyist, the quattro was the car that really started the Group B BHP madness. it came in with 4wd and showed everyone the way. then evolved into the amazing sounding S1 E2.

Plus its right hand drive, and I know that no matter how long (if I owned one) I had the Lancia that without fail I'd try getting in the passenger side!

Integrale for me.

I had a 16v integrale, it never broke down once in the 2 years I owned it, but it did, always have something wrong with it. You fix one issue and then another would take its place.

I have an S2 avant at the moment. To be honest it is just like the integrale, it's always got something wrong with it. These are old cars, I don't think reliability is going to be a factor in the decision. They are going to be as bad as each other.

I would have an another integrale tomorrow, but with out a garage to store it, it's not going to happen.
