I'm looking to buy a used Range Rover with a budget of up to around £18k. From reading various sources it seems that 2007 onwards is definitely the way forward. What I can't decide is whether to go for the 3.6 TdV8 or the 4.2 supercharged. Both seem attainable for my budget, with a mileage of up to around 70k. Any opinions? What should I be looking out for? Or should I just avoid RR completely....?

Either... Just depends on how much you want to spend on fuel!!

I did exactly this. Chose the TDV8 on a 57 plate. I'm a fast sports car type and originally only bought this to tow the race trailer, but so far I love it and take it everywhere including snowy hillclimbing in Austria. It's been brilliant fun, better on fuel than my MX5 2.0 Sport and is a pleasure to drive and own. The TDV8 3.6 is a great unit and no slouch for pushing such a heavy vehicle along. Obviously not as fast as the SC but still plenty torquey enough and reasonable fuel returns if you're not stamping hard on the gas all the time. If you do stamp and fancy the SC version, I suggest you buy a fuel tanker to follow you around everywhere wink You won't regret the TDV8, but your pocket may regret the SC.

depends on the deal you can get ...when I last changed and bought another Range Rover product the petrol V8 was a better deal, although hard to find e.g 50 for sale versus 500 diesels

for my budget of £30K, I could get a petrol with sub 30k miles on it or a diesel with 60-70k miles for £5K more in price ...i chose the petrol ...you need to be doing a lot of miles in it to make a few grand difference in fuel

so I would just buy the newest/lowest mileage car you can get for your budget, and chances are that will be a petrol V8 smile

Thanks all for the advice. I think I'll have a look at - and test drive - both and buy whatever seems the best value. The SC is definitely luring me it's way...

Yeah but you don't get the Disco with the Supercharged OR the TDV8...

...it has also had its hem raised by a few inches. wink

Very definitely Supercharged.

Fuel bills aren't that bad. I'm getting 19mpg on my daily 70 mile round trip commute into Hammersmith.

The instant response of this engine is a major draw and they sound great. Subdued, but great.

Drive one....

I got a drive of a 07 3.6 tdv8 vogue a few weeks ago.

Compared to my D3 the engine response was far better, it had so much more grunt, from all revs and had a lovely grumble to it.
Cornered really well which surprised me as loads of people say it's a wallowy car. A remap would really wake it up.

They do have issues with egr valves, the alternators can pack up and the turbos are known to go if you don't keep the oil changed regularly.

It had me really considering trading up and if I hadn't so much cash into the D3 I would have it for sale and a VSE 3.6 on the drive..
