Afternoon. My wife is looking for a route out of teaching and is considering HR or corporate training as she already posseses many of the skills required to do these jobs. How does one go about opening doors and finding out more about routes into these fields? I've had a quick Google but it doesn't throw up much. Would talking to a job agency in the relevant field be a useful start?

Many thanks.

For the training option, many Universities provide business training to local businesses, from one-off, subject specific sessions to full courses. It would be worth her hunting down and speaking to local universities to get some more insight on this.

Depending upon the subjects she teaches as a teacher, there may also be some opportunity with relevant trade bodies.

Thank you. I'll pass the idea in her direction.

Unfortunately she may well have to start reasonably near the bottom of the ladder if moving into HR. If she has been in teaching/public sector for a long time then commercial organisations will question her business knowledge. It may be easier to break into HR within the teaching or related industries. HR though can be very broad. Dpending on the nature of the organisation it can be a broad and varied role or a much narrower specialist role. I would always advocate gaining the full spectrum of experience though. A related or half way step is to go into training, possibly training delivery in the first instance then onto design, analysis and leadership of a function. All the while whilst doing that I would where possible get exposure to other HR projects to broaden the experience if she so wishes.

A trawl of the full spectrum of 'HR' roles and their person specifications will soon confirm how she stacks up; see http://hr-jobs.peoplemanagement.co.uk

Any gap can then be closed through targeted training and membership of the usual bodies such as CIPD. As stated, she may have to aim low initially, but if she's good she'll soon climb.
