if you use the search facility and look up 'bit torrent' you should turn up a number of useful posts that will answer your question(s).

Basically BitTorrents work by downloading files off other computers as small chunks and fitting them back together.

Main advantage is that instead of say one 100mb download, you get numerous smaller downloads and i think its impossible to loose a download feed due to this. You won't get to 99mb then it looses its source.
