Shin splits...
Discussion
I think this is even off topic for the pub... but then again i need to rid myself of these so i can run to the pub quicker.
Right...
Went for a road run earlier this evening. Hadn't run on the roads for a few weeks so i've come back with bad shin splits in my left leg. Rather annoying and a bit painful.
Are there any obvious remedies? I'll be in the gym tomorrow evening so any decent workouts to do to ease the tension would be fab.
Cheers all

I used to get bad shin splints when a teenager :
remedies :
1) avoidance :
good quality running shoes with thick ( gel these days) soles, calf stretch before running , avoid running on hard surfaces.
2) cure
Plenty of calf stretching , some rest from running ,avoid hard surfaces as above.

Used to suffer badly from shin splints Rico, a right PITA exacerbated by running with weight.
A few things you can do, get some Brufen first and take that for a few days to reduce any inflammation.
Find a good remedial physiotherapist and book a course of treatments, they're really worth the money.
As for training well best to take it easy for a while til any inflammation goes down then concentrate on stretching the calf muscles both front and back. If you're exercising the calf muscles make sure you throw in some seated raises as you can only work the soleus calf muscle when the knee is bent.
Losing weight will also work wonders (not that I'm implying you're a fat knacker

My calfs have always been tight as i've done lots of cycling since i was a wee nipper, in various forms so lots of exercise but without doing a full motion of movement of the leg muscles.
Thanks for the advice
