Waxing a Guitar ???

I've got some Simoniz car wax and was wondering if it could be used on a guitar. After all it is car wax so can't be corrosive so I was just wondering if it could work a treat or cause something catastrophic.

On a nitrocellulose finish, I wouldn't. On a poky finish I doubt it will do much other than leave a greasy smear. On an untreated wood, or open grain. (Think Warwick basses) I wouldn't recommend it either.

I had an old squier strat I wanted to give to a relative. I polished it up with a DA polisher and car polish until the paint was flawless and then waxed it with car wax (Purple Haze). Came up looking like new.

Its a 2010 Epiphone Casino in red. I think its only Gibsons with the nitrocellulose finish. I'm not sure what mine got on it. If its a water based lacquer I'm steering well clear.

If you trying to remove the Plectrum rash that guitars get then diluted T cut is sufficent and with a mop pollisher will do a great job (most budget guitars use a Poly eurathee finish and its a tougher finish than the tonally superior Nitro Cellulose. places like www.manchestergutartech.co.uk (.com)? will have online tutorials for maintennance Got any Pictures of the Epiphone i love the big ES335 types im building a Cusotm finished Stratocaster at the moment

I would say that it's not a good idea using any 'wax' (sealant) with silicon in it as the white dust it produces can get into the electrics and cause issues (especially with volume and tone pots if they aren't sealed). I'm thinking of Autoglym Super resin polish as one in particular that many people might have lying around their garage. There are plenty of non silicon ones that should be OK to use; even on nitro as after all my RS2000 is painted in cellulose and polish didn't harm it.

FWIW it's not only Gibson that use nitro finishes; you can still buy Fenders in it (usually the older reissue models) and possibly other makes too (certainly other makes from the 70s and back). I'm having my 1982 JV Squier Strat refinished in nitro even though it would have originally been poly; as it's a '57 reissue I think it's more authentic and I don't care about it being devalued (not that it's worth that much) since I'd never sell it anyway as I've had it since I was 17...
