Cars transported with taped number plates

Saw a car transporter this morning, full of old (as in not new) cars. All had the second half of their number plates obscured with black tape. Never seen this before, anyone know why they'd do that?

Cloning, speed/congestion cameras or anpr avoidance?
When my midlife crisis disappeared on a low loader having broken down I assumed it was to preserve what was left of my dignity.

Since it's an easy source of a reg number to use on a cloned car (the cars are off to the scappy), it's to avoid helping the cloners/ringers (of which there are zillions) out. Unlike some leading online auction sites who let them sell v5cs for dissolved heaps :-)

I guess they may well have no tax or insurance, therefore could be flagged by ANPR as the lorry drives down the road, I could well imagine that the driver may well have been stopped by plod on occasion and this is a measure to stop it happening again. Maybe there's a market for temporary plate covers for cars on transporters and low loaders.

Would need to be cheaper and quicker to apply/remove than tape. I'm oot.

Mmm, guess all the suggestions make sense. A new one on me though and they certainly didn't look like they were scrappers...just a little tired looking.

They're probably part-ex vehicles on they're way to auction or Poland/Ukraine, and the tape is to stop cloning etc.

I've seen this on what I guess we're ex-lease cars. More likely to be ANPR as if you ar e intent on cloning a car there are millions out there, why pick on ones on a moving transporter?

I never knew there was a market for ex-UK cars in Poland. You live and learn.

Cars in our salvage auctions have the last three letters of the reg obscured.

Couldn't tell you why.

because owners forums create lists of all the smashed up cars to warn people and it makes selling them very hard, there have been a couple of RS audi's that have been punted about dealers all over the place trying to sell them

its especially good when the dealer describes them as "light damage" and half the front was missing lol

Similar to the build register that the RS Owners Club have for the Mk1 Focus RS - there have been a few examples in the last few years where cars have been logged as undeclared write offs by the reg & build number plaque and yet somehow disappear for a month or 3 and then make their way back for sale via a bedroom trader or small car sales outfit claiming the car is a never crashed / damaged example, but the new paintwork is put down to "recent restoration" or "repairing stone chips" or suchlike
