What is the collective thinking on the Cartier Calibre de Cartier chronograph?

I'm quite taken with it but no idea how well it is regarded....

Personally I think that is a very attactive watch and will be very well made - Cartier are owned by Richemont which basically means Jaeger-LeCoultre will have designed the movement for them (or given them on old ebauche to modify); it doesn't get any better than that smile

They are a jewellery brand but they are unusual for a jewellery brand in that they have a very long tradition of making watches. You could hardly call them newcomers, which Chopard suffers from in some ways even though they (L.U.Chopard) are on a par with the VERY best.

Yes Cartier used bought-in movements for as long as they could (until ETA/Swatch reduced the supply to Richemont) but now they have some in-house stuff, the puzzle is complete.

I like it.

I'm with Yeti on this one. Cartier seem to get a bit of a bashing on some forums as they're perceived as a fashion brand. I quite like some of their range. The Roadster is one of my faves. That one is also nice. thumbup

Chopard seem to get slated. A friend of mine has a Miglia GT XL and I think its a great bit of kit. Used they are priced really well too.

I confess I like Cartier as well, even though I have that niggling feeling that I shouldn't because it is a "fashion" brand rather than a "proper" brand. As others have said - Cartier do have a long history of watchmaking and seem to be much more popular for men on the Continent than in the UK.

The Tank Francaise seems to be the default watch among my wife and her friends. I very nearly bought a Tank Americaine a few years ago - glad I didn't as I suspect they lose a lot from new to second-hand - but I would be very tempted with a second-hand one as a more mature option in a few years' time.

Cartier are a jeweller, but certainly not a 'fashion' brand. They are never fashionable nor unfashionable, they are constant. Don;t cunfuse them with Michael Kors or some clothes designer!

I've got the non chrono version with a black face and it's a really nice watch. A 42m face, so a bit larger than a lot of 'smarter' watches. Personally think the face suits the non chrono layout better.

They just launched a diver version that is also quite the looker too.

Beautiful watch; I'd own a chrono or a non chrono in a heart beat. Not so sure about the diver but yet to see one in the metal to make an informed opinion.

Kors is cheap crap made in China.

Cartier a fashion brand lmao. The Tank and Santos are iconic and predate the submariner by 50 years. The tank and Santos are 100 years old and Cartier watches are made to a very high standard .They also ooze class. (there watches tend to be more dressy and classic styled than the forums favourites of diver and sports watches)

You're right. "Fashion" was a poor choice of word to describe Cartier watches. I certainly didn't mean they are fashion watches like, say, Armani.

Maybe a better word would be jewellery - that is, I think of Cartier as being jewellery first rather than watches. I know Cartier has a long history of watches, but the Cartier brand says jewellery to me before it says watches. And the niggling feeling would be that I was buying a piece of jewellery rather than a watch.

Cartier are widely credited with creating the first ever wristwatch (in 1904) and have been intermittently producing in house movements since the 1920s. Fashion house they are not, they have a longer history of wristwatch manufacture than any other company!

This.

Cartier make some nice watches and the quality of them is excellent. Many just have ETA movements rather than an in-house one that's all.

For whatever reason I've met a lot of very attractive ladies who wear Cartier watches.

Unlss you're wearing a G-Shock or a Suunto, your watch is nothing but jewellery. Outdated, anachronoistic jewellery.

I have no problem with that smile

I bought a tank nearly 20 years ago because I wanted a slim dress watch but I also knew that Louis Cartier was credited with the first wristwatch. So for me they are a watchmaker and a very fine jeweller.

My girlfriend has been hinting that she wants something Cartier - and a watch seems like a decent place to start. Does anyone have any tips on where / how / how much to pay for a used ladies watch?

The stainless Tank Francaise is nice, I've seen them from about £1500 upwards.

Hi Andy. Have you bought the watch yet ?
Are you buying new or used ?
I liked the look of it and will try one on next weekend,to see how it looks,I have a slim wrist so don't want anything too chunky,I also fancy a metal bracelet although it looks very smart with the leather strap as well.
I shall try to go the used way but there doesn't appear to be any around at the moment.
