£500 car tax why ?????????? Goverment are robbing bandits.

I am fed up with being charged extra for so many thing under the pretence of being Green !!
To the extent I totally have no interest in saving the environment as 90 % seems a scam to fleece you , from surcharges on flights to mental car tax prices , I was recently looking for a tasty car and the number of nice cars I discounted because of the high tax ! it is not because I am tight just my principals ended up buying an 8 year old car to avoid it !
If they really have to charge mental prices surely they could drop it back down to £280 after the first 5 years
7 year old high C02 cars it will really hit there saleability and value

While two wrongs don't make a right, £500 for 12 months tax in the UK sounds like an absolute bargain to me for this reason. Try €1809 for a 21 year old BMW, plus many thousands more on registration tax if you import or buy new!

One of the reasons I sold my R32 a couple of years back, whilst it was still worth good money. I cant see there being a huge market for cheap cars with £500+ tax discs and 20ish mpg.

Why do people make such a fuss about ved?

It's a tiny proportion of most peoples' total tax bill (e.g. have you ever worked out how much VAT you pay in a year? Don't....)

The VED is on my 2003 Audi A8 4.2 is £285 (£55 a year more than my previous 2000 A4 TDI). Buy a pre-23/03/2006 car and enjoy the same low level. Two of my other cars are zero-rate historics and on the runabout it's £30 p.a. - a total of £315 for four cars.

You don't have to pay a lot, you just need to figure out how not to...

I think now they are abolishing the physical tax disc, you should be able to pay tax monthly. Even at £500 a year, that's just over £40 a month. Probably a similar amount for many people's insurance. And if you drive 8000 miles a year at 25mpg, that's £150+ a month in petrol. So for many people that's £250 a month before you factor in servicing and depreciation.

I know it can be an emotive subject, but driving a nice/'thirsty' car is a privilege not a right...

Well it is all about saving the planet not simply taxing us. That is why my TVR (5.0 V8 with a 22mpg or so average) is so cheap to tax....

I think there is increasing sense of injustice that someone running an older car doing 2000 miles a year pays £280 or more whilst a sales rep doing 30,000 in a £40k BMW pays £30. It is pretty easy to see which pollutes more.

The whole road tax system needs to change as revenues are falling off a cliff. As older cars leave the road and are replaced with ones which are free or near to free to tax revenue falls and is accelerating.

another option is a Yank they are capped at £250 a year even a ZR1 or Shelby Mustang lol

I know the cost is diminished by depreciation/running costs but every penny counts when I am saving up to fill my tank of my 13mpg V8 Vantage Aston !

my point was it just makes you hate the Government and hatefully of false green policies !

because you have to physically make a payment and get nothing but a coloured bit of paper in return (for the short term)

income tax is taken before you see your money and petrol duty whilst horrific at least you get something physical (the fuel)

£280 is a lot for someone owning a £800 car who spends £400 a year on fuel. There are a *lot* of people out there like that.

It isnt that bad once you accept it, its a tenner a week, I put it by each month like I do with all yearly bills that I will end up paying more for if I dont, i.e. paying 2 * 6 months is even worse.

You get folk panicing as they may have to pay "The Expensive Tax" and they base all their car purchaisng decisions on the tax being £280 instead of £180, but then spend 17 grand on a car, probably on finance that they havent checked the rate, probably something like an Astra that will plummet in value, but they will have saved £100, which they can savour whilst they wonder why their car doesnt like going up hills.

Petrol has stayed the same for a while, insurance has settled down a bit so maybe now is the time to enjoy a nice car ?

If someone really cant afford it then it is best not to, but I know people who can well afford it who fret about that cost and fanny about with diesels for 5k a year, they rattle on abotu 45 mpg but never mention the ten grand to change after 18 months...

I see it as, I can afford it now, if at some point I cant, I wont but at least I will have done it, might drop dead, at least I will have done it, we all have limited years on this planet, not enough time to make it worth saving a few quid to drive something we dont want.

Embrace it, enjoy it, wear it as a badge of honour, you are in a pretty elite club and all the zero ved and £30 30 grand cars are due to get bummed next, I ask you £30 to tax a car that cost 30 grand and does 30k a year, that cant last.
