Am still having problems spewing engine oil (at least 2 litres in 30 minutes qualy at Silverstone on Sun) from one or probably both of breather pipes on top of the rocker covers into my catch-tank in the passenger foot-well. It's dry sumped with the reservoir in the boot and is neither smoking from the exhaust, nor down on power and the oil pressure is good - Dom thinks I may have over-filled the reservoir. I was originally advised to fill 1 to 2 inches about the baffle in the reservoir, but providing the oil level is below the return pipe at the top of the reservoir (itself 4-5 inches above the baffle) I can't see how you can over-fill! I'm now using Millers 20/50 oil on Dave Stewart's advice, after wondering if the 10/40 synthetic oil I had in previously was too thin when it spilled out at Brands last November whilst Tim Davis was driving my Griff. The problem also seems to be rev related - negligable spillage below 5000rpm.

hi Richard,
when I first had the s3rbera it also dumped large amounts of oil under heavy braking down hill because the catch tank was lower than the engine but this was an AJP not a rover, we moved the catch tank to a higher position and it stopped happening, might help
regards
Tim.

Hi Richard,
Jim Walsh is haveing the exact same trouble at the moment
On our last two test days it spewed oil out instead of going into to catch tank

I've always filled the AJP (& the RV8 before it) to a level just BELOW the baffle (with the engine ticking over). Are you certain you're not over-filling it Rich? biggrin

we fill out tank to just below the top baffle, it was once accidentally filled above the baffle and guess what it chucked a load out

I fill mine to the baffle and have no problems at all. My catch tank is fitted above the fuel tank under the tonneau (sp?). Your car looked as though it was smoking to me and judging by the amount of oil you were chucking out I'm surprised you wasn't black flagged. To me, and I know nowt really, I reckon the crank case is being pressurised.

I don't think you should take it out again until its sorted.

I think you'll find the oil level should be just below the baffle when hot, any higher negates the purpose of the baffle (to remove the air).

Thanks guys - your advice makes good sense to fill at or just above the baffle. I only over-filled it due to advice about upping the oil pressure, but am now confident that has caused the problem. Easy fix and shall be out again soon - apologies to Dave, you listen and you learn!!!
