What would you buy??

If you had 40k (that's pushing it...but you've got to aim high) to buy a second car for weekend fun on road (primarily) and track (now and then, 4-5 times a year, Nurburgring being a prime destination)...what would you go for?

I have a poor car history in terms of ownership. I buy a car, spend lots of time and money on making it into something more focused...then I sell it. My most recent purchase was November and I've used it 3 times before putting it up for sale

It has to be something fast, fun, focused and low maintenance (relatively speaking) that I can't really fiddle with. I want convenience really, the most recent car has 2 seats, no roof and takes 2 people to remove the body panels to check the fluids.

I'm thinking German, Porsche or Audi. Currently R8, 997 Carrera or Cayman R...what do you reckon?

If you're looking for a 'toy', and one that can combine track days/visits with a degree of creature comfort and practicality, then a 911 GT3 of some type would seem ideal?

Not sure on the prices of these, but I would this that £40k would get you the very best of the 996 variants, and possibly a 997?

Corvette Z06 (and some change from your 40k).

Cheap servicing, bulletproof engine, 7:22 round the 'Ring, has a roof (and even a big boot!), extremely reliable.

I'd be looking at the Cayman or 1M if you can get one. To be honest, there's a lot of good metal at that price range which fits the bill.

For your criteria I would go Cayman R. I think a standard 997 wouldn't be special enough and an R8 a bit sanitised.

Like you I have had a number of cars that I have spent serious money on making them quicker, more responsive etc but the Cayman R is exactly right out of the box.

40k will get you in a poor R8 (the later cars with wave rotors drive vastly better imo)

Definitely a great car but I think you would be hard pushed to get a good one for anything near £40k at the moment.

Strip the seats and replace with 2 buckets, remove any unnacassry weight and you'll have a bloody fast, nice sounding track car. Or keep it all in place and use it as a daily aswell?

What's wrong with the earlier R8 btw?

My next question ofcourse will be running costs. Cayman R, 997 Carrera S, 997 Turbo?, R8, Vette. Guessing Vette would win that round?

It's so bloody hard finding something (well for me anyway) that ticks my ever shifting boxes!

I have a couple of occasional cars. Both can be bought within the 40k budget.

Recently I've been looking again, and I was thinking about the 40k (stretching it) milestone.
Top of the list is an S2 Exige, I was also pondering over a nice GT40 replica big V8 mmm......

Really a GTR? Love 'em but heard nothing but tales of big bills when used on track (admit that'd be only a small percentage of the time!) Can't knock what that car offers for the money though.

I would have said a TVR Sagaris but the prices are higher.

So frankly, a well sorted TVR Chimaera 5.0.

Fun, and will cruise to Germany for a pootle around the 'ring. Also has enough room in the boot for your luggage.
