Hi,
the 2286 petrol in my Dad's Land Rover makes a knocking noise when cold, very much like a loose tappet, the noise goes when it is warmed up.

The tappets were recently set at .010" so it can't be that.

I did wonder about pulling the cam followers etc but suspect that is a cylinder head off job, if I get that far I may as well check the piston rings as well.

Any other ideas about the source of the noise before I get the spanners out?

regards

Unfortunately my Crystal Ball is broken at the moment (lent it to Puma, he used it for his evil purposes and it's now broken (and out of warranty.......)

;-)

Sorry, that is no use to you OP what-so-ever, but can you give us any more info as to what it sounds like, is it revs dependent, only there when fully warm etc?

Sounds like / similar speed to tappets.
Only present when engine cold.
Tappets checked and within tolerance.
Could be cam follower (this engine has roller followers acting on phosphor bronze slides which actuate the pushrods) but no apparent reason for noise being temperature dependant.
To inspect cam followers I think I have to remove cylinder head anyway by which time I and a handful of bolts away from puling the pistons and checking the rings and bores aswell. Core question is how/why does engine temperature affect the noise I hear and cause it to stop when engine is at working temperature?

Could also possibly be piston slap which disappears when the clearances reduce as the engine warms up to its operating temperature.

Could also be as simple as the exhaust manifold not sealing well until the metal heats up and expands - that's what mine was.

Hi,
thank you for the suggestions...
exhaust manifold - worth a check
piston slap - maybe

One my Dad suggested is the mechanical lift pump which operates on an eccentric on the camshaft. As this is the second easiest I'll remove the lift pump and run the engine to see what happens.

First thing to check is the exhaust manifold.

Thank you for suggestions...
