Well my new car to me has broken down after 3 days...
Initially not a problem but as the day progressed it became clear that train is not an issue for tomorrow.
Emergency call to Hertz, and I have a Focus on my drive tonight. My initial bottom lip well and truly struck out on seeing 1.0 on the slip, but they had nothing else....
What a fabulous little engine though.... Pull's well, very small turbo lag. All the kit. Handles like a go-kart (compared to off road cars anyway).
I'm actually looking forward to the morning!

They are excellent engines! Ford would hasten to add they are no bigger than a sheet of A3 paper. Pumaspeed will tune it to almost 170bhp, although not for a small fee.
A4. The block is smaller than an A4 sheet. I can confirm - I see them all the time around the office and they're hilariously tiny.SnailTrail said:

Many of those kits seem to include the removal of the catalytic convertor, isn't that an issue for MOT's these days? As in, if it had one fitted from the factory then it should have one fitted at MOT time?Axionknight said:

Yes you're right it does. I'm no sure how the MOT emissions test is carried out, but on an engine so small and efficient as this one wouldn't it likely pass without it? Regardless, "straight thru (sic)" exhausts seem to be common among the boy racers of today so maybe we should be asking them how they get around it...SnailTrail said:

Easy way: keep the cat and have the car fitted with a decent boost/map controller that allows you to switch between standard/many boosts. Easier way, find a friendly MOT tester.
Did you see what happened when Ford took the engine, whacked up the boost and put it in a single seater racer? Oh, and made it road legal. Chris Harris kinda liked it:

These are great engines but they are very hungry on boost. Quick modification is to add a boost guage and then monitor your boost - keeping off of boost you get brilliant economy - run into the boost you get 1.6 performance with the equivalent 1.6 consumption or worse.
That might just be the most depressing thing I'll read today.I have one as a hire car currently. I hate it. There is obvious turbo lag below 3k rpm making it difficulty to drive smoothly. The revs die horribly when you engage the clutch making it difficult to drive smoothly. The driving position seems designed for some sort of orangutan with very short legs and long arms.
If you keep the revs up and drive quite aggressively it's better but that's not how I drive.
Impressive for a 1.0 maybe but definitely not going on my favourites list.

Be interested in what sort of economy you'll get from it - heard mixed reports - some say good, some say bad - Not driven one myself yet
Things have changed at the last minute. I'm now using my brothers Mondeo that was supposed to be swapped for a 520d yesterday. That all collapsed at the 11yh hour, hopefully to be put back together today. I'm in that area of the country today, so will have the ability to drop off and collect.Irritatingly this means the focus hire is going to cost about £10 per mile...

Change gear when the thing tells you to.My mother averages 40-something out of hers. But she drives everywhere at 3000 rpm so I don't doubt it could be better still.
Hell, a colleague has a Fiesta ST which he has averaged 45+ out of on several journeys by using the available torque properly.

I've used two.
I was impressed by the 100ps standard one.
The 125ps Zetec-S less so. It seemed less responsive and wasn't as good to drive, but that was partly due to its weird steering , weaving and tram-lining.
Mine does that, seems to love trying to lurch right every so often as well. Though I put it down to it being a hire car that someone had probably kerbed. Maybe not. HmmmmI was impressed by the 100ps standard one.

Driven a 14 plate petrol 1.0 Corsa recently an whilst the interior feels better built its not a nice car to drive especially on motorways. Very gutless engine, mpg not impressive and vague steering. Not a biggie but the standard stereo is also one of the worse I've experienced. Cheap and cheerful I guess...

It was a bit odd whilst trundling about. On a straight, but slightly rippled Tarmac, road whilst pressing on a bit, the car was all over the place. The steering feel was non-existent too, which didn't help.I'd like to know if other people found the 100ps engine better too
