Can still open the drivers door when locked?

Bit of a random one this, but my dad noticed it when he thought the GL was open but it was locked.
You just need to pull the drivers door handle twice, on the second pull you feel it manually opening the door? The alarm then goes off.
We are taking it to merc later this week to see what they have to say. Not sure if anyone has heard of this before? As we just stumbled across it by accident but am worried how long it's been like this for... We have owned the car from new, and it's never had any alarm issue or door problems.
Would be interesting if anyone else tried it on their GL.
