Hello all,
After about 6 years away from Porsche ownership I'm now back, or at least will be at 1600 this afternoon.
Moved away from Porsche due to their abysmal servicing (ie. everytime the car went in with one fault it came out with two). Ended up scratching the Ferrari itch for a few years and also had an e46 and 645ci as daily drivers. Realised a while ago that I hadn't driven the Ferrari for a year so sold it, then spent ages deciding which car to buy. Was probably even guilty of asking 'What car' on here. Narrowed it down to an R8, Vantage, Cayenne or 991.
R8 - Love the looks, felt a bit too much like driving a Golf - Golfs are great cars however I wanted the R8 to feel more special. In the end a number of reasons made me reluctantly rule it out. 1) Boot space - despite it's size the boot space is impractical and I'm keen to go back to only having 2 cars (Mrs Smirnoff has an SLK) 2) Seemed too wide to park where I usually park during the week, however good friend has since pointed out it's not as wide as an S4 so could be wrong on that one 3) Dealer experience was dreadful - literally couldnt give them money. Had actually decided to buy one however dealer would not return calls folllowing test drive, this happened with 2 different cars.
Vantage - Drove it and was disappointed, drove a different car (same model) with an Aston Martin driver and loved it - decided to buy it (12 plate v8 roadster) and the dealer experience again hasn't been great. Nice sales guy however it doesn't look they have enough mechanics as the delivery kept being delayed. It was supposed to be ready yesterday however didn't even receive a phone call.
Cayenne - Hated the new look when launched, thought it looked too much like a Lexus or Infinity. However this look grew on me and now I think it looks great inside and out. In the end I decided it was too sensible for the summer and wanted something sportier.
991 - Have wanted a 911 since I could walk however I think the Cayman looks better now and most people I talk to seem to say it's a better sportscar, obviously everyone has their own views and opinions and the reality is that Porsche don't make a bad car however the only thing that was pushing me towards one was the badge - that was probably important to me in my twenties however not anymore. Saying that it's still on my list of itches to scratch.
So.... of my 4 choices, which I deliberated on for ages... I didn't choose any of them.
Instead I popped into my local Porsche center, saw a Boxster S (981) - took it out for a test drive, realised it was sooo much more modern than the Vantage, loved the driving experience, loved the sports exhaust and PDK gearbox, paid the nice man a relatively large chunk of change and will be picking it up in a few hours time. Then the plan is to buy a Cayenne to replace the other halves SLK (she doesn't know of this cunning plan however I'm sure she'll happily take the 981.) to ensure we have something sensible as well.
Not sure why I shared this however I usually lurk here so thought I would contribute for a change.

Loving the sports exhaust already although trying to keep revs down. How long do the recommend for the run in period?
Have decided that the Boxster was the right decision over the Aston.

Running in - it's something like keeping it below 4k for the first 1000 - 1200 miles (check the manual, it's in there somewhere albeit in Km). 4k revs is precisely the point (in an S) where the engine really wakes up and kicks you in the back!
