I have a question on this. Bear with me. Only Londoners will understand this stupid situation.

The ultimate aim of this is to get two cars that have a residents discount for the congestion charge zone.

I live in London, within the congestion charging zone and have two cars (having just bought a second a few days ago). I am the registered keeper of the first one and am about fill out the v5 as the new keeper this afternoon or should I add my wife as the keeper?

I have a residents discount on the first car and have been told I can't get a second residents discount on congestion charge unless the car is registered to someone else ie. my wife.

We will both be insured to drive either of the cars and we actually share but I have insured them on a multi car policy.

Do any of you forsee any problems with me registering the second car under my wifes name?

This is all just to avoid paying £10 each time to drive the car - which would be everyday!

My fiancee is currently driving my old car, the insurance policy is in her name with her as the main driver but the registered keeper specified as partner/spouse. Didn't make any noticeable difference price-wise.

The insurance on 'my' car was actually cheaper when I put the registered keeper down as a private lease.

Insurance companies don't usually differentiate between spouses, just tell them the RK is your wife and they will be ok

This. I had a joint policy and when asked the question about was the vehicle "in my name" I said no, it's my wifes name. They were totally fine with it and just made a note in the file.

OP, I also live in central London and had a similar problem regarding resident parking permits. It's just easier to give the car to your wife (as a present), with her name on V5, insurance, parking permit, congestion charge extension, the lot, and add yourself as a named driver. All perfectly legal and above board assuming both of you drive the car regularly.
